A nice change of pace from the other Real-time strategy games out there. Its a good feature to be able to play on such a large scale. this is the first strategy game that I've played in a long time the has Land Sea and air units, but its not just about units theres the base to think off as well, like having Strategic missile defence for incoming nuke attacks or having your own nuke launchers as well as long range artillery. Supreme commander offers the player much more with the ability to queue orders or manipulate patrol routes with a simple drag and drop. The feature I love the most is the one that allows you to fully zoom out to see the entire map and even from this zoomed out view everything is controllable. If your one of the lucky few to have two monitors set up you can even have one monitor displaying the entire battle field with your other monitor zoomed in up close. This is a game that requires a decent pc but if you have anything above a 2.8 CPU with a gig of ram and the latest g card then you shouldnt have any real issues playing this game. For me personally this game joins the ranks of other great strategy games like Medieval Total War II, Defcon, Darwinia, Company of Heroes and Dawn of War. Dont get this game if you have a short attention span or youre a sore loser because you wont enjoy it, but if like a good RTS and you find that other strategy games are just a little to familiar then Supreme commander offers something new that the RTS gaming world needed a new perspective tired of games like Command and Conquer then give it a go.
This game did truly blow me away when I first played it
It's nothing short of amazing
The 3 factions are greatly balanced and with more units and maps being added in patches it simply keeps going from strength to strength
The downside is that you'll need a pretty hefty machine to run it, the recommended is a dual core CPU with 1Gb RAM and a 256Mb DirectX 9.0c video card (PCI Express GeForce 7600GT or ATi equivalent)
Although I could get it at playable frame rates at medium settings on a single core AMD Sempron 64 bit 2600+ with 1Gb RAM and an AGP8x 256Mb GeForce 6600
The game really is worth it though and I now run it at max settings, oh it makes you smile
All RTS gamers I recommend this to you
And with the expansion Forged Alliance (adding more units and another faction) due this winter its worth picking this up now
This game is simply awesome. It might not have the best graphics or the best single player, but that is not what Chris Taylor RTS' are about.
Multiplayer on SupCom is unrivalled within the RTS genre, imagine; upto 8000 units waging war in a 6.5k sq Km landscape over land, sea and air! The game has a massive amount of unit types which for the most part are well designed and suit their respective roles. There are a few duff units but its no big deal. I won't lie when I say the game does have a quite a high system requirements to run properly, my old athlon 3800+ pretty much begged for mercy - my new Core 2 Duo E6600 has no such problems! The game is optimised for Dual & Quad core processor's. The game is much more dependant on processing power than GPU bandwidth, my old ATI X850 ran the game smoothly at an acceptable resolution - its only went to pieces when war were declared...
There's acutally an expansion to the game due for release in November which adds a new race, new maps and over 200 new units to the game... Can't wait!!
So, in conclusion, don't listen to all the nay-sayers, SupCom is a great game and anyone who enjoys RTS games and has the PC to play it as Chris Taylor intended, will enjoy it immensley!
I have been playing supreme commander since early beta and I can say without doubt it is the best RTS game ever made. With regard to some of the comments made on this page about the game the scale element is what makes the game so enjoyable. Sure you need a reasonable pc to play. The game is optimised to use 2 cores, one for UI the other for all the math calculations, networking etc. But this is mid 2007 people, if you dont have a core 2 duo and 2gb RAM with a decent graphics card you shouldn't be playing the game: perhaps you could go fire up a copy of pong and turn on your lava lamp....
The vast scale opens up the RTS player to battles and tactics never seen before! Battles can last for well over an hour but no two battles are alike with so many choices on offer. When I go back and play Company of Heroes or Command and Conquer I am always trying to scroll out as I want to plan a flanking manouvere but the tiny maps restrict the options to a boring "who builds quickest wins" scenario. Supreme Commander allows you the freedom to plan your attacks, set your 5 factories on repeat build, capture a nearby island and build some aa on it and build an outpost closer to the enemy all whilst doomed out so you dont miss a thing. Brilliant !
Then there are the experimental units which are actually very well balanced in proportion to how much time and effort they take to build. Creating a stable ecomony will allow you to allocate huge resources to building giant Spiders and Robots or the ultimate weapon - nuclear missiles. Unleasing these against your opponents is a real thrill as, in assination mode, if your commander unit is destroyed your entire force is wiped out and you loose. I have played many games where just before the nuke lands to destroy their base in come a load of gunships and destroy my commander ending the game. Big does not always mean best and you are never quite sure or what will be thrown at you next.
However, I would say the game has quite a long learning curve to get the best out results. Unlike other lesser RTS games you have to create and manage an economy. How well you do this has a direct effect on how quickly you can build your forces and bases. Get it wrong and you will cripple yourself and be in for 30 mins of boredom. Get it right and the game will reward you hugely.
I highly recommend the game to any fan of RTS. But be ready to experience something you have never seen before and don't rush to early conclusions because you simply haven't mastered how to play the game like some of the other reviewers on the here.
A great RTS game with HUGE maps and battles like you've never seen before!
Visually stunning on my Quad core and 8800 pc its a fun game with great sea, land and air battles with hours of non-stop fun.
If you like your stratagey games then this is the one for you my friend.
