Review

Ghostbusters: The Video Game, based on the smash hit motion picture franchise and featuring a completely new story, is coming to PC in 2009. Coinciding with the 25th anniversary celebration of the film's original theatrical release, the game reunites original cast members to recapture the unique blend of humour and fright that established Ghostbusters as a pop culture sensation.

Penned by original Ghostbusters writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, Ghostbusters: The Video Game brings members of the original cast together for the first time in 20 years. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson lend their voices and in-game likenesses to the original story set two years after Ghostbusters II, with Manhattan once again overrun by ghosts and supernatural forces. Players will have the chance to chase, attack, and catch ghosts in a funny and frightening battle to save New York from its latest supernatural plague.

The gameplay just isn't enough.

While the experience of being a ghostbuster was most kids dream back in 1984, when the first movie was released, technology and computers weren't capable of recreating that experience for your average home users. Instead, a game based on the franchise was released and it was generally well received. Unfortunately, I cannot really say the same about this game.

Graphically, the game is sound with good sound and excellent use of video, though I did find that my video ran about 20% faster than the audio making continuity a factor. Accepting that this could be a computer related issue, rather than a game issue, I proceeded to play.
The game does do a good job of introducing the process of capturing and containing ghosts and the story flows well - credit to Ramis and Ackroyd for that. The story is linear, with no means of diversion - it would perhaps have been an interesting ploy to give the story some adjustability in an industry where linear games seem to be a dime a dozen.

Nevertheless, the game plays well. Unfortunately, there's little value for money here, as the game itself is playable once, with no extension for multiplayer. I, myself, would have liked to see a possible multiplayer version also, perhaps with the player taking the technology they'd gained through the story, and started a franchise in another city - I'm sure New York isn't the only haunted city in the Ghostbusters universe. The potential is there, but the game fails to achieve where it needs to. In an age where value for money is a key priority, Ghostbusters fails the customer miserably. It's a shame, because the story is sound with the 4 characters reprising their roles well.

No multiplayer

No replay value to the game
8-10 hours of gameplay

With more diversity in the story and more options for upgrades (players can achieve all upgrades well before the end of the game), and a multiplayer option, the game has the potential to reach 5/5. As it stands, it only deserves 2/5, I'm afraid.
