For generations, stories have been told of the fearsome weapon of the Norse god Thor. Legend holds that he who wields the hammer has the power to smash mountains into valleys and the strength to destroy even the gods. For more than a thousand years it has existed only as a myth... until now.

Designed specifically to take advantage of the latest technologies Tomb Raider: Underworld represents a new advancement in exploration-based gameplay. As fearless adventurer Lara Croft explore exotic locations around the world, each designed with an incredible attention to detail resulting in breathtaking high-definition visual fidelity that creates a truly believable world and delivers a new level of challenge and choice.

Features:

  • Reach new heights with the broadest range of acrobatic abilities and utilise objects within the environment to uncover new paths to explore
  • Discover ancient mysteries of the underworld hidden within the coast of Thailand, frozen islands of the Arctic Sea, the jungles of Mexico, and more
  • Lara's skill-set has been drastically expanded to incorporate actions you would expect of a fearless, athletic adventurer. Lara now performs 1700 moves and is a far more intuitive character to control
  • Each level is an elaborate multi-stage puzzle masked within an interactive environmental playground offering more flexibility over how the area is solved
  • Choose to pacify or kill, target multiple enemies at once with the new dual-target system, and shoot with one hand while suspended with the other
  • Lara's upgraded inventory includes:

    • Sonar Map - A revolutionary new tool that emits an active sonar ping to create a 3D image of Lara's surroundings, perfect for uncovering hidden items and locations
    • Multi-Purpose Grapple - A claw-like device with a high-tension cable designed for climbing, grappling, performing wall runs and manipulating objects within the environment
    • All-Terrain Motorbike - Built to handle everything from the jungles of Mexico to the icy glaciers of the Arctic

     A flawed masterpiece.

I've been a big Tomb Raider fan since the very beginning, and I'm glad that after those last few developed by Core (circa Last Revelation to around Angel of Darkness) Crystal Dynamics took over and really breathed life into what frighteningly looked like a dying franchise.

TR: Underworld doesn't disappoint. The visuals are certainly the best yet in the series, where owners of high-end PCs will relish the clarity and detail of the surroundings, which provide a colourful and refreshing breath of fresh air if you've been playing dreary first-person shooters quite a bit like I have. The gameplay is also a lot tighter, the latest incarnation of Lara having an expanded array of skills, the movement of which is very much more human and fluid thanks to the choreography and motion capture of gymnast Alison Carroll. Combat has also been tweaked and is certainly more dynamic, though some people would argue that the inclusion of the so-called "Adrenaline Mode" still makes things a bit too easy, so its strange that they went to so much work to make combat more of a central theme in Underworld, and yet still haven't made it as challenging as some of the revamped platforming elements that the series is better known for. Additionally the camera still has the habit of producing some nausea-inducing shaking and bugging when you're in certain close spaces, not to mention having a will of its own when you're trying to get a better look at something.

There are also occasional instances of clipping, where Lara seems to be able to stutter her way through some small obstacles, getting caught on some rocks which cause a glitchy looping of movement and visually loosing a limb inside a wall or floor. From the experience I've had playing it, its more a detraction from the atmosphere of the game rather than an encumberance that prevents you from progressing, so it shouldn't count against the decision to buy it or not.

This might sound like a lot of negativity, with positivity only focused on graphics, but this isn't my intention. If I had to put it simply, we've often found ourselves battling glitches like this with previous Tomb Raider games, but it obviously hasn't put off the huge fan base, and quite rightly. Its still a hugely enjoyable game that delivers what you'd expect from the series. So if you liked Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary, you'll love this.

Many years ago I played the first incarnation of TR on PS 1, which was great but the franchaise lost its way a bit in the middle of the series; I own all the titles but didn't play the 2 before Anniversary as it lost its sparkle ( I installed and played a couple of hours but gave up through boredom).
By todays PCs T.R.U. runs well, it's not as demanding as Far Cry 2 or Fallout 3. People with a dual core processor and a video card that was good a year ago will benefit from all the graphic detail in this game. There were moments in the game where I had to just stop playing and look around. Lara does benefit from the motion capture of Miss Carrol which makes her more human; she walks and runs very much like people do. The game comes very close to controlling a CGI cartoon character.
The ending is the best so far, giving you time to relax those aching fingers; sit back and enjoy the show.
If you're a fan of TR then this is money well spent. Started the game on Friday 6pm and finished it Sunday 8pm ( I did sleep btw).
Bad points: The controls can be a bit 'funny' at times and the camera can lose it's way.

     Lara's back!

Great gameplay, Lara is back to what she does best after a few recent dodgy outings. The graphics are stunning with breath taking vista's at every turn. The underwater scenes are particulary detailed. Some jerky camera angles made me give it four stars, other than that it is definitely worth the money.

     Plays great

Just playing the demo on PC and plays fantastic. Great new fluid moves, great locations and plenty of awe and wonder. The game's on order now!
