Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir hearkens back to the days of the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale franchises by including full party customisation, dungeon crawling, and free exploration of a non-linear game world via an Overland Map.

In the aftermath of the defeat of the King of Shadows, the Sword Coast is in the midst of an uneasy economic recovery. Trade syndicates have sprung up to exploit the post-war confusion for their own ends and the players' party will wade into this uncertain environment. In order to increase their own fortunes, they can either ally with a syndicate to create a trade empire, or cut their own path through Faerun by preying upon caravans and selling the goods on the black market. As they attempt to extend their influence, players will become aware of a new faction working behind the scenes: the evil, shape-shifting, serpentine Yuan-Ti.

In addition to trading and economic manipulation, the Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir Overland Map allows players to explore the Chultan Peninsula and Sword Coast in a non-linear manner never before seen in any of the Neverwinter Nights games. Exploration will take players from well-known locations, like Neverwinter and Crossroad Keep, to more exotic areas, such as the xenophobic jungle nation of Samarach. Groups of highwaymen and monsters populate the Overland Map and the farther from civilisation the player roams, the more difficult the encounters become. The 15-hour campaign in Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir is also packed with new classes, spells, creatures and playable races.
  • Travel the Sword Coast and Samarach using the open-ended exploration of the new Overland Map. Use skills like Spot and Survival while on the Overland Map to avoid ambushes and even find hidden locales and lost artifacts.
  • Create your own full party of adventurers. Devastate your foes with a squad of fireball-flinging Sorcerers, form a solid wall of steel with a party of Fighters, or strike the perfect balance in your party by spreading out the classes you choose for your characters.
  • Improved party gameplay including streamlined party conversations, a new Teamwork Benefit System, and powerful party feats.
  • The world's economy reacts to your adventures and choices. And, through trading and quests, you can expand your merchant company into a massive trading empire.

 Poor expansion IMHO

To be perfectly honest this feels quite a poor and mind numbing expansion.

The two notable differences from previous NWN games is the Overland Travel and the ability to have up to 6 companions. Other than that it seems more like a Diablo clone than a proper NWN expansion. If you love repetitive Hack n Slash battles this game is for you, otherwise I personally wouldn't recommend it.

Overland Travel can get very boring, very quickly (although there is a small thrill in discovering a new location) as you have to physically move across the map (a la CnC Kane's Wrath or Dawn Of War), until later in the game there's no quick travel.

There's also not really that much of a storyline or plot, it mostly involves buying or finding resources and trading between different locations. Anyone expecting an epic storyline will be sadly disappointed especially regarding the end boss.

Anyone looking for detailed exploration and expecting to be able to wander through towns, villages and other locations will be annoyed to learn that whilst you can go anywhere on the overland map, the towns are all non explorable apart from the Temple of Waukeen, City Bazaar and Inn. Also many of the random locations seem cut and pasted, one location looks and feels very similar to another and there seems to be 3 different scenes for random fights in the middle of nowhere.

Crafting also seems to suffer, whereas in the original NWN2 you could have +5 weapons and armors and in MoTB you could have +8 equipment, in SoZ you are limited to +3 equipment.

Enemies also seem to have ridiculously low hitpoints, while the random encounters on the overland map are nearly all one of a small numbers of monsters (i.e. Skeletons, Giant Spiders, Stag/Bombardier Beetles, Wights, Will-O-Wisps, Shambling Mounds, Wyverns, Ogres, Batiri (a type of goblin) or Trolls).

Good points:

Couple of new classes.
Ability to have 6 party members.
Revisits old locations such as Neverwinter, Crossroad Keep etc.
Overland Map COULD be a good idea if there was more variety and a quick travel feature between places already discovered (similar to Fallout 3).

Bad Points:

Repetitive Hack n Slash encounters.
No real storyline.
No real incentive to level up or do side quests.
Crafting dumbed down (really +3 max? What's that about).
Repetitive overland travel.
End boss fight.
Buggy.
Broken quests.
Nowhere near enough RPG, more RTS style.

 So good.

Powerful Graphics
The graphics in the game blow me away, well by pc in fact. The power of the graphics made my pc scream with how nice they look. New buildings and objects and the weather effects had me begging for more.

The downfall
Some new features just make the game also much more confusing. There is a new chat it works with your party this can be helpful if you lack bluff or any other conservation skills but it doesn't really indicate any difference chat for the part unless you click on them. Checking your party for new chat commands can be very annoying if you are talking to someone who likes to talk about pointless stuff to get you started on a quest.

It's alot different from the other neverwinter expansions. It is almost as though the previous games never happened.
Good for a quick and easy game would not recommend it to hardcore fans.

 Avoid this expansion

If you liked neverwinter nights 2 then should buy this aswell because its more of the same poor gameplay bad story and demanding system specifications.
Having said that if your pc had trouble running nwn2 then this expansion actually improves the runspeed of your game ever so slightly i went upfrom 45fps to an average of around 55fps, although it could just be the new content. Heaven only knows why they didnt improve the system specs of the original game hardly seems fair to have to spend more cash to improve a game that you paid for fair adn square
