Rage is a groundbreaking first-person shooter set in the not-too-distant future after an asteroid impacts Earth, leaving a ravaged world behind. You emerge into this vast wasteland to discover humanity working to rebuild itself against such forces as bandit gangs, mutants, and the Authority - an oppressive government regime that has a special interest in you in particular. Featuring intense first-person shooter action, breakneck vehicle combat, an expansive world to explore and jaw-dropping graphics powered by id's revolutionary id Tech 5 technology, Rage promises an experience like no other.

Story Overview:
Fearing a planet-wide extinction from a massive asteroid headed towards Earth, world leaders are faced with the inexorable task of ensuring human survival. Left with few alternatives, life-sustaining pods filled with select people are buried deep beneath the earth's surface. You are one of the chosen members of these modern day arks and abruptly enter the Rage universe after surfacing alone. Leaving you to your own devices to stay alive in a world filled with those who prefer you dead, Rage combines powerful storytelling with heart-pounding action.

  • Visceral 1st-person gunplay and exploration: Take on bandit gangs and hordes of mutants using an arsenal of exotic weapons and special items, such as wingsticks, personal turrets, sentry bots, and remote-controlled bomb cars
  • Frenetic 3rd-person vehicular mayhem: Burn rubber across the wasteland in your very own super buggy! Upgrade and customize your car with special parts, paint jobs and weapons, then test your skills as you battle four-wheeling bandit clans and participate in deadly races
  • Three ways to play for unlimited action: Immerse yourself in a rich story-driven single-player experience, grab a friend for exclusive co-op modes, or go online for all-out multiplayer mayhem
  • An expansive experience: Beyond the first-person action and vehicle combat, Rage offers a world open to explore, with unique characters, side quests, and a compelling storyline
  • Graphics that have to be seen to be believed: Powered by id's cutting-edge new id Tech 5 engine, new Megatexture technology brings the vast wasteland to life in never-before- possible detail with action running at an astounding 60 frames per second

 Horrendous console port

| | See all COD4Fan's reviews (3)

Horrendously buggy, random crashes and screen tearing, 1-2 second delay on textures loading, no graphics options to speak of. Surround sound doesn't work properly.

A massive letdown and frankly I can't believe this game was ever tested properly on PC. Releasing software in this obviously unfinished state should be illegal.

Currently rating 3.2 out of 10 on Metacritic from users.

An overview of Rage - a few kinks but well worth the time

Unlike the first review who has jumped the gun on suggesting this game is a console port, they have clearly not researched what the new ID tech 5 engine does and therefore I will clarify a few issues. Firstly Rage is not a poor console port, it is anything but, the new ID tech 5 engine is very advanced and what it actually does is monitor your system and outputs the best image quality settings based on your CPU and GPU configurations and performance - this does this whilst maintaining a constant 60fps output, no matter what appears on screen. Although many PC gamer's usually like to have a customized settings for gaming specifics and image quality i do believe these might be included in a future patch, as i have an advanced machine running a GTX 580 i can tell you the system runs beautifully far in advance of the console versions in terms of visuals.

Another quick issue on bugs, although this has a slight issue with screen tearing this is only due to v-sync being set to off, this can be rectified by forcing vsync on with your AMD / Nvidia driver location or in the configuration files for rage, although there are other slight bugs this is not uncommon for a recently released game and will be soon rectified. Additionally the problems with the recent AMD driver compatibility has been fixed, i have tried this using an AMD card and the new drivers have solved the issue.

Now for a final note on the game itself, the aesthetics for the game are outstanding, both on console and for PC this is a very visually impacting game with a lot of detail placed on terrain, the NPCs, smaller areas (caves, tunnels etc) and all surrounding environments. The AI during combat is well balanced and very adaptive to your particular fighting level offering challenging play with very balanced difficulty settings, all factions have a unique feel and constantly evolve your use of the weapons. Shooting and combat is very balanced in the game, the weapons feel powerful but not overpowered for particular fights, the NPCs are carefully crafted, offering a wide variety of talented voice acting to immerse you into the story. So far i have played the game for six hours straight and i am loving it, although there are a few bugs to be fixed it does not take away from the enjoyment of the game with a decent system. As long as your PC meets the minimum requirements and you have the latest drivers you should not have much issue, if you are still skeptical about the PC version then wait a few weeks for patches to emerge to fix a few minor bugs. I hope this has cleared things up for you and you have gained more information on what the new ID tech engine does for your machine and will at least try the game on some format.

 Awesome shooter!

A retort for the review by COD4Fan..

Have nearly completed the game, no bugs found yet. Loading is fast, graphics options are basic but enough, surround sound works fine on both onboard Realtek and Asus DX sound card.

A great piece of entertainment that has kept me glued to the keyboard for the last 6 hours+

Metacritic can sling a hook, base your judgement on your own experience.

Top 100 Games Reviewer

I've changed my mind, in a previous review I gave this game only three stars. This was based on first impressions and because of quite a few technical issues I was experiencing. Now I have tweaked the configuration myself and given the game more time to develop. I now think it's one of the best games I've played for some time.

Graphically it's a little weird, after the tweaks it's one of the best looking games to date (including Crysis 1 and 2) but also one of the ugliest... it's the way it manages textures, when they are right it's exceptionally pretty, when it's it's wrong it's a muddy smudged mess. But like I said, after a few tweaks these moments are rare.

If you're an ID shooter fan you may find some aspects a little jarring... this is an RPG shooter with racing! The shooting elements are fast, furious and intense. Although you are up against the same old enemy types time and time again, bar a few interesting boss types. The RPG side is very "lite", consisting of weapon upgrades, vehicle upgrades, a few side missions and in game games. The racing becomes an essential part, as your means of transports for mission to mission and town to town is vehicular. The races provide upgrades to this vehicle, essential for getting to the mission in one piece.

Overall this is a great addition to the ID legacy, it may not change the way we play games as some of their previous titles have, but it's a damn good addition to the genre. What genre that is? I'm not quite sure.

 Decent game, no issues

I had no issues on an ATI 5770 gpu, after installing 11.10v2 drivers from AMD the game ran on full spec 1920x1080.

Decent story ( based on a novel) graphics are great, gameplays fantastic, AI and character animation are very good.

The people complaining of it being a console port are wrong, the whole issue happens because of the new pc developed technology not working with certain gpus.
My friends have the following cards and played without problem, 5770,5650,6850,6970 and a 560 and 580, and they all worked no problems. I'm sure the game will run on most systems now the patch is out.
