if u like the idea of making your own super hero then give champions a go. Even if you stopped playing this game in the 30 free days (which I didnt by the way) you would still get more play time and fun then the average title nowadays.

I just wanted to respond to a couple of comments on here. First off someone said they hit a wall at lvl 7-8 in their build, lol. Now what they are saying is that they did the tutorial and then the first chance they got to actually pick some powers they made some mistakes and therefore that must mean only the "perfect build" will work. I have 8 characters with totaly different builds, some attcking some defensive others support and some that can flick between different roles. All these characters have different powers and builds so I dont see this "perfect build" thing, thats just lack of imagination.

And secondly someone said that once you go wrong you cant do anything about it because it costs too much. This is utterly wrong, just yestoday I retcon'd my character at lvl18 back to all but a couple of powers and rebuilt from scratch with the money I had no problem.

If you like not being limited to cookie cutter builds and trying to think outside the box then give this a go, it the current price you can't go wrong.

           A breath of fresh air!

This game has just hit 1 month old and it is fantastic and has been since launch. The combat blows every other mmo out of the water. The power choices are amazing altho they also give you enough rope to hang yourself. You need to choose carefully but with the try-before-you buy system, you only have yourself to blame.

Your given the tools to create a fun and cool hero to play, starting with the awesome character creator to the powerhouse. Your skill with these tools is what will determine how much enjoyment you get out of the game so ppl giving this low scores are really rating their own skill at the game.

Another reviewer said they hit a wall at lvl 7-8... Rofl - majoir l2p issue. The "wall" is a lack of any skill whatsoever.

If you dont like superheroes, its prbably not your thing. Theres pleanty of magic type stuff in the game but if thats mainly what your into you may be better off looking into one of the many fantasy mmos out there.

If you liked city of heroes, youl love this.

Solid casual MMORPG - lots of potential

          | | See all Stuff2SellU's reviews (1)

If you are the type of MMO gamer that lives for Raiding to gain high end loot and tiny incremental improvements to stats (or just cool glowy pieces of armour) this is NOT the game for you.

If this is your first MMORPG, or you don't have hours to play at a time then this may be the game for you.

The character customisation is second to none - the options are almost overwhelming. But unlike other MMO's where you start out in rags and end up in glowy uber armour - the way you look on day 1 is the same as you look on day 100, 1000 and so on. (Although a visit to the tailor allows you to change outfits)

Combat feels faster and downtime between fights is far shorter than most MMO's. The developers are still balancing the classes (although this game is really class free, allowing the player to build any sort of hero they want) the player still feels just about 'super powered' enough.

Graphics are fantastic, taking their inspiration from the classic 'four colour panel' comics. Audio is fairly lacklustre - music is OK, but sound effects are weak - there's not much 'oomph' when punches connect for example.

On a solid PC with a decent broadband connection, lag is rare. In fact the entire launch of this game was extremely good - compared to other MMO's that have had numerous major bugs this one has been relatively problem free (with the exception of a few vocal minorities who are intent to make it sound like the game is utterly broken!!)

There are a number of nice touches to the game (such as Open Missions that do not require grouping. And the fact that there is only one server so you don't need to ensure all your friends create their characters on the same server), but the game doesn't really deliver anything innovative compred to it's competitors.

As it stands right now (17-09-09) the amount of content is a little lightweight, and level cap can be reached in approx 40-50 hours. There are also only a small number of areas to explore, however Cryptic are already gearing up to release a new area in a huge content patch in October, for free. Overall the game is fun and I'm really enjoying it in short bursts, and so give it 3.5 out of 5).

The potential for the game is pretty huge, and can only get better. When the rough edges are smoothed out, and with some more content this game will only get more and more fun.

           Based on Beta

          | | See all Scracey's reviews (6)

I was in closed beta playing right up until open beta ended yesterday. Based on what I've seen from my experience there this game is alot of fun. Firstly character creation is imense, if you've played the CoX games it will be familiar to you however the customisation is taken up to another level, hundereds of options and a multitude of sliders, 4 colour combination instead of CoX's 2 and also the ability to customise individual parts like shouders, gloves eyes etc instead of both.
The game plays like its intended to, more like a console game than a traditional MMO, the standard settitings needed some customisation to work best for me but thats just a personal thing. As it wasa designed to be portable to Xbox (more info pending we are told) it plays on the xbob game pad, and suprisingly well too. For an MMO it doesn't follow the usual holy trinity of Healer, Tank and Dps, the game has done away with classes and you create your character by picking literraly any powers you want from the whole game. Of course it is still possible to create a healer or a tank but the style of play makes it possible to take powers from all aspects and switch between roles using the "roles" and "builds" systems.

The nemesis system is an awesome addition, usiing the same creator that you create your characters with you can create an arch enemy, pick his henchmen and personality and he/she will attack you randomly and there will me mission arcs leading to the grande finale showdown.

Its not without its bugs of course. Whilst I know it was just a beta I'd expect to see a few creep past into launch. But I have played half a dozen MMORPG launches and if I'm honest this beta was probably more polished than all of them. Gameplay can get a bit repetetive some times and there are only 5 zones making it in at launch. We have been told by criptic they have a long term commitment to bring out quality content updates on a regular basis, this of course remains to be seen.

PvP is in aswell in the form of competition matches, underground fighting rings and apocalypse training scenarios. In a similar fashion to WAR xp can be earned via PvP but at a slightly lower rate than PvE. Also taken from WAR is the open mission concept whereby a mission happeens in progresivly harder stages out in the open world and any player in the are can drop in and take part, grouped or not and reveive a share of the rewards.

The game wil include microtransactions in the future which is something I always find diagreeable in a pay 2 play MMO but we have been assured anything that effects gameplay will be achievable in game and anything else is cosmetic. Another criticism I have is that some of the descriptions for powers and advantages and often game mechanics is vague and confusing though they do seem to be updating alot of it on a regular basis.

All in all I loved my time on this and can't wait for it to be released. Whether the game has the ability to keep me on for a long time I have yet to see. I'm looking forwards to see what the end game content is trully like and whether the promised content lives up to the PR. I'm also looking forward to the future addition of SG bases, a greate feature from CoX that hasn't made it into launch on CO. But I highly reccomend this game to any super entheusiast and look forward to seeing you in there, it would have had 5 stars had there been just that little bit more variety in the game world but I have faith that will come soon enough.

Fun for the first 7-8 levels - after that downhill!

First of all, the character editor in this game is simply amazing. You can create whichever superhero you had in mind and you'll spend many hours doing that!

The quests and story is quite good as well and is different from the usual grind but some occusional quests have some grind but the fighting in the game somewhat makes up for it.

Now to the bad parts, which is major in my opinion. Like an earlier reviewer also said. If you don't have a PERFECT build for you superhero you'll will fail in the game. You need some defense build otherwise you'll die all the time (I died all the time even with defense powers).

You can't just choose whatever you want because you'll won't suceed finishing the quests. To bad you can't respec your build either if it turns out you weren't pleased with the powers, you'd chosen in your build, because it's so ridiously expensive you'll never afford it! Instead you'll ending up creating 10x failed superheros before you have learned to spec, but at that point you have realised that there is no freedom of choosing powers!

Another thing which I didn't like about the game is that you can create the character exactly how you want it right from lvl 1, after that your character won't change pretty much! It's impossible to see any difference between a lvl 1 and lvl 40 (just with extra small slots for clothing).

These two big major faults made me quite the game and cancel my subscription, even before my time run out. It's not fun to be a superhero with you own chosen powers and feel really gimped, in fact more gimped than I felt in any other MMO.
