3 Expect to struggle with RoL's auto-update mechanism.slowlyover | 15/02/2008 | See all slowlyover's reviews (3)The game might be very good, I don't know, I haven't been able to play it yet.Once again, as a regular purchaser of games from legitimate sources, I am frustrated by the "you are all pirates" attitude of game publishers. What am I talking about? Well, like most PC games, this one requires several 100 MBs of updates to bring it up to date. Unlike most games, Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that the only way to do this is via a broken auto-update/inadequately-specced patch server mechanism. The patches are not available as zip files from your usual suspects, filefront, gamershell, fileplanet etc. As several people have been reporting, the RoL auto update tends to fail after 20 mins, typically on patch 7 or 8 of 11, with a message like "Invalid Patch: RETAIL-0608.0901.0002-0610.1601.0000.RTP"If you google for that error message on experiencing the problem you will hopefully find, as I did, that some helpful soul has thoughtfully zipped up their RoL patches folder and bunged it onto a web server somewhere, along with instructions on how to deploy, to help alleviate the grief this issue would otherwise cause. Thanks to all the helpful gamers who take the trouble to share this kind of advice. No thanks to Microsoft for being so precious with their "ooh, patches, we can't let you download them, you might be a pirate" attitude. And congratulations, BTW, to play.com for introducing the DRM-free mp3 downloads. You know it makes sense!
