Great arcade racer for the PSP

I admit right now that I'm a Ridge Racer fanboy and that I am guilty of honking on the Ridge train in several of my reviews on here but please don't let that put you off too much!
Ridge Racer for the PSP is my 2nd best reason to recommend the purchase of a PSP (after the magnificent Loco Roco). It's an arcade racer and those that like the unforgiving reality of F1 games (with all aids off) Gran Turismo or Forza will quickly realise that this is not the racer they are looking for. Those that have enjoyed older Ridge Racer games and the various Outrun games should feel right at home and be in their element: it's fast, slick, well presented and more addictive than Pringles that have been delicately seasoned with Colombian marching powder.
As you are probably aware there is a sequel to this game available for the PSP that's been imaginatively titled 'Ridge Racer 2'. I'm afraid that Namco's rampant imagination seemingly knows no bounds and that Ridge Racer 2 is cash-cowingly similar to this. I'd say that if you already own one or the other then you'd have to be a die-hard fan (like your humble reviewer here) to warrant the purchase of the other but if you own neither then rest assured that both are equally brilliant and very worthy of a 5 star rank.

Still amongst the best grahics on PSP this arcade racer is an excellent example of what the PSP can offer. With plenty of tracks and a fairly lengthy career (World Tour) mode along with the normal time attack and arcade modes this is a must for race fans. Even in World Tour mode you only have to compete in one race before being offered the change to save - thus making it ideal for gaming on the go!

This game came with my psp on christmas, and at first i thought it was good good but after then it got borring and all i was doing was the same races over and over again.

It is like owning the entire series in your pocket, and it's practically the last word in celebrating the past and current Ridge Racer.

It's in real life I want to drive real cars and get a feel for how they handle. In a game I want adrenaline, groovy courses and drifting round corners at nitrus speed! Here, I get all this. However, even with all this the Ridge Racer gameplay does eventually get a tad repetitive and with every car handling very similar, it has a tendency to get a little boring. And sometimes, a bit silly (the drifting direction your car is facing can be questionable).

Ridge Racer is a quality arcade racer nonetheless and while it lacks the depth and fun of say Gran Turismo or Wipeout, it's a very nice game.
Recommended but not overly.
