Technically amazing, but sorely lacking in modes

First, this game both looks and plays incredibly, with probably the best visuals you've seen on a handheld game. It runs super smoothly and the level of detail in the character models is astounding.

However... the game modes on offer are very limited. There's no arcade mode, a rather unengaging "story" mode called Gauntlet, a 'trial mode' and little else beyond the versus and character creation stuff. It really is quite barren compared to the likes of Tekken Dark Resurrection or Naruto Ultimate Ninja Heroes 2 on PSP.

It's the best multiplayer fighter you'll find on PSP for sure, but if you're playing by yourself, this one probably won't last you a weekend.

          Shame.

           Better than I expected

Ive been a big soul calibur fan for more than 10 years since the dreamcast days, so I was very excited when I heard about this realease. However when I read all the reviews I was pretty disappointed due to the lack of proper single player game modes (as you'll read from the reviews below).
So I didn't buy it at first...when the price dropped to 10.00 I thought it was worth a go. I bought it with full knowledge of the game modes available and expected to be disappointed but I was pleasantly surprised!
There are a couple of game modes which ive been playing alot: the endless survival and quick battle. In both cases you just fight against lots of computer controlled characters. The gameplay and controls are amazing, exactly like the PS3 version and graphics and sound are some of the best i've seen on the PSP (you even get the random voice over guy babbling nonsense about destiny and the like).
I've enjoyed playing it and theres also kind of achivements to collect through battles. There are 200 titles to be won and if you beat a character with a certain title you can win that title. It extends the replayablity for all the completists.
You can also customise your character and with the titles you've earned play against others using Ad Hoc Party on the PS3 (assuming you have a PS3).

Overall I've had alot of fun playing this game. The low expectations I had initially helped me appreciate the game more for what it is. It definitely could be better and I hope Namco can release another version with proper single player modes but for 10.00 its worth it.

           The soul still burns

The basic fact that Namco managed to cram Soul Calibur IV onto the PSP is nothing short of a miracle, newcomers Kratos (of God of War fame) and Dampierre (a moustached madman who appears to be a strange mix of Voldo and Jack the ripper) are worthy additions and are far more suited to the gameplay than the now (thankfully) absent Star Wars characters ever were.

The game isn't perfect though as the PSPs controls are slightly unsuited to the fast-paced combat of the fighting genre and the lack of a proper 'story' mode may put some off.

High hopes but rather dissapointing finish......

Since PSP release into the market 4 years ago, I have been waiting for this game to be played on PSP. So I was very excited when this game is finally available on PSP. However, no arcade mode and story mode which is biggest let down. The abscence of the two most important features are missing which lead me to deduct 2 stars for the rating, or otherwise excellent game.
