Good for a quick bit of fun but ....

I bought this even despite the other views. I agree with the other reviewers as when you click fight on the battle icon screen it is a case of crossing fingers. So far I have won every battle, but I do feel that the 'strategy' is too limited in fact far too limited to be considered a true strategy and not enough directly controlled action to be a RTS. All said and done, I bought it for a few days train travel to London. The game was perfect for the hour journey each way and I grew to like it.
I grew to actually care about my legions and the casualties. I thought a good game but can see that any serious play will reveal short-comings. At the moment I am enjoying it and will play again when I go to London again in a few months.

I have to say that I ignored the bad reviews, as I love ancient history, especially the Roman era. However, this game was not good. The actual battles are terrible, had no idea what was going on, but still somehow seemed to manage to win them all. The only reason this got 2 stars instead of 1 was the cut scenes

This is sadly a very poor game. The idea of it being "made" by The History Channel drew me to look further into it, but please don't make the same mistake. This is really just an old PC real-time strategy game (that wasn't so good back then) changed to appear like a History Channel documentary.

The History Channel parts are good, but they are few and far between. The battles in the game in reality have very little historical relevence. Parents hoping to buy this game as an educational tool steer clear.

Play.com also sell History Channel DVDs, as well as the PC game "Rome: Total War". Altogether, these will provide far more entertainment and have a much higher educational value than this trash.
