4 Great handheld, but basic packageNiaiMitch | 30/10/2007 | See all NiaiMitch's reviews (2)I never owned the original phat PSP but this is a great piece of kit that's capable of some pretty amazing graphics for it's small size. Originally I wasn't that impressed with the PSP's lineup, but now that games like Tekken: Dark Ressurection, MGS: Portable Ops, Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkrie Profile, Daxter, and the GTA Stories games are on the shelves this would be a great time to pick one up.Now onto the slightly more negative stuff.Sony were incredibly stupid not to include a right analogue stick on the PSP console, as in games where you'd normally need to move the angle to see around you it makes the camera a bit of a nightmare. You've also got to keep in mind this really is the bare bones package. All you get is the base console itself, the battery, and a charger, so you'll have to buy a memory stick seperately if you want to (and of course you will want to) save your games. A bit gutting we're getting such a raw deal as America is getting Slim PSP packs that include lots of extra stuff for LESS than what we pay for the thing by itself, but what can we Europeans do?
4 Much better than the originalmasterchop | 10/01/2008 | See all masterchop's reviews (5)I've owned the original PSP and got rid of it due to the clunky feel of the analogue and the long load times. I was quite cautious in buying the slim n lite but I'm glad i did.Although the analogue is only slightly raised compared to the original PSP it seems to offer much better control. Maybe this is contributed towards by the slimer frame of the system. Either way it alot more comfertable in the hand. The load times are also improved slightly with the extra 32 megs of ram. Can't give this a 5 star as the screen still has some ghosting but the slim n lite really makes PSP gaming a fun experience and now I'm a PSP fan.
5 UnbeatableTheNakedGenius | 18/05/2008 | See all TheNakedGenius's reviews (7)If you want portable anything or everything, get a PSP.This console can do anything you want it do, unless you have freakish expectations.Firstly, gaming. The games for this console are brilliant. They, unlike games for the DS, have brilliant graphics and can feel just like the home version, but portable. The controls are just like the playstation controls(minus the second shoulder buttons, which you don't miss). You can play online, just like the PS3 and with your friends on their PSP's, with only one of you needing to have the game. So, gaming: 5 stars.Secondly, videos. The PSP can play both UMD's and .mp4 video files. Video quality on the PSP is fantastic, like DVD but better. Not Hi-Def, but good enough. There are loads of UMD's you can get and to put video files on you just plug it in to your computer, with a USB cable, and copy and paste the files in to the VIDEO folder. Couldn't be simpler.Thirdly, music. The PSP is great for music, as it can play through earphones and, because of the speakers on the bottom, you can listen to it without them, which is awesome. The speakers are there for the games but are even more useful for the music. It can play .mp3's, .aac's, .wma's, pretty much every audio format you can think of. Again, you just plug it in to the computer and copy and paste the audio files in to the MUSIC folder.Fourthly, pictures. Pictures can be viewed individually, or in a slideshow. You can zoom in and out, rotate, set as wallpapers, there's alot. You just copy and paste in to the PHOTO folder. Finally, Internet. You can connect to any wifi network, through the PSP. Where the PSP differs from other portable internet accessible gadgets(except for the iPhone), the PSP's internet appears just like the internet on your computer. You can download video's, song's, picture's, demo's and any other downloadable files with your PSP. They will go automatically in to their correct folder i.e. song's in to MUSIC, video's in to VIDEO etc. Or any folder of your choosing. Also, the PSP is amazingly customizable. You can change, themes, wallpapers, audio equalizers, button configurations and lots more.It is an amazing console, and if you judge gaming by this and the PS3, you can tell that Sony really has brought more than it's A game.
5 PSP loses weight 'n' looks great !GeneralVortex | 06/02/2008 | See all GeneralVortex's reviews (8)This is a vast improvement lighter, thinner and better speakers. Graphically superior to DS + the benefit of being able to play UMD movies.(Great for long haul flights)I had the original and as mentioned in previous reviews PSP Lite is a lot less clunkier! I love the fact I can plug it in to my LCD T.V and play games/movies full size. (Component lead required & also check your TV compatability 1st though)
4 Good, but when they said base unit they meant it.Tricapsule | 28/12/2007 | See all Tricapsule's reviews (1)The PSP itself is very good. The screen is really high resolution and the sound quality through the improved speakers is pretty good for a handheld. The unit itself does feel a little plastic and with the new lighter weight and simplified UMD & Memory Stick slot, does makes it feel a bit cheap. As the base unit it only comes with the handheld and the charger, nothing else. So it will mean investing in a case, Memory Stick and USB cable to connect to a computer (which you'll need to for copying music/videos etc. to the PSP).The web browser is so-so. It does display full internet web pages, but is on the slow side and often runs out of memory when opening a busy web page.As games go, the catalogue of 'good' games in my opinion is pretty few, but the few that merit purchasing are pretty impressive. Games such as Metal Gear Portable Ops are pretty much equivalent to PS2 games in graphics (quite an achievement for a handheld).Overall I have given the PSP slim & lite 4 stars as it is a neat piece of kit for all it does, but you will need to fork out extra money to enjoy it fully. Also if its purely for gaming a DS would be a better investment.
