I bought this the other week and I must say, I'm a very happy customer. This re-make has been done well and it really does feel like you've gone through a time warp back to the days when games were simple yet fun. This is the game that spawned a dynasty of gaming greatness and saved Squaresoft from bankruptcy. It might not appeal to the younger gamers as much, especially if your first and only experiences are with the later titles like FFX, FFX-2 or FFXII. But it has an old school charm that just can't be passed up by any RPG fan.

The story is simple, 4 warriors have to quest to save the world. There is no back story at all to the characters, they don't even have names for you to go with if you can't be bothered to name them yourself. This is where it's vastly different from the later Final Fantasy's and most modern RPG's where you get heavy story and character development. The talking is kept to a minimum with CPU controlled characters as well, this game lets the gameplay do the talking and it does it well.

The sprites and graphics look great, they've touched them up nicely while still keeping the old school charm that comes with 2D RPG's. The sound quality is great, memorable and catchy themes that you can't help but hum along to.

The gameplay like I said previously is great, the battles can be a little too frequent at times but it's never overbearing and the battle system is simple yet gives so much replayability with choosing different character classes etc. It's made a great transition to the handheld market, it's so easy to pick up and play, and if you need to do something else you can save it at any point and pick up exactly where you left off.

I consider this a must buy, especially at this price. You'd be cheating yourself by not buying it!

A nice simple port of a classic

Final Fantasy was THE RPG title of its time, it introduced the phenomenon to the mass market and set a benchmark for future RPGs to go by. The game has been remade with beautiful 2D graphics and a musical score which will have you humming along wherever you are. The original game had many flaws and this remake has done little to compensate for them, it is still very slow paced and it does get repetitive quite easily but its an RPG afterall. My main problem with the game is the lack of direction you seem to have, with NPCs hidden away in corners who give the most vague details of where to go next and which monster to kill so its a very time consuming game. The controls have mapped almost perfectly, although to access the map function quickly requires you to remove your hand from the D Pad in oder to activate the screen. Overall I rate this game a 3/5, for a solid RPG experience which fills a few hours.

Lacking in structure - go for PoPoLoCrois on the PSP

I am a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series after being hooked from FFVII. One of the main reasons behind my love for the games are the incredibly engrossing storylines and likeable characters.

This is where the original FF really let me down. There is no background to the characters, there is no compelling back story, it is sadly to say showing its age.

Don't get me wrong, if you are wanting the game for nostalgia's sake it's worth a try but if you are looking for an rpg with a bit more story and detail in the characters for the PSP then go for the hidden gem that is PoPoLoCrois.

Final Fantasy is without a doubt one of the best-known, most renowned video game series ever.

So a remake of the first final fantasy on PSP must be awesome right? Wrong.

Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is solid, however its so traitional and old-fashioned, I'm a great fan of RPG's of old, but this game gives the player no indiciation at all of where to go or what to do, monster encounters happen every 5 seconds, its really hard-core

The few good points I could mention are that the graphics, while not ground-breaking, are solid & load times are fine.
What really brings the game down however is the 'seen it-done that' This game has been re-released so many times with no new content added, in fact let us remember final fantasy 1 & 2 were released on a double package on the GBA, so why do we have to buy them seperate?

You can't argue with this classic formula, however it does feel seriously dated, if you happen to be looking for a great PSP RPG, look to Breath of Fire III, or Disgaea, or indeed Final Fantasy War Of The Lions, This game really only appeals to those who have played it when it was first released.
