Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance is a radical new take on Hideo Kojima's best-selling tale of stealth, heroism and double-crossing. Featuring new missions, characters and settings created by Kojima-san and his team, Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance retains the ground breaking stealth-based action of its predecessor, with players guiding a series of characters through key terrorist situations.
Solid Snake and his protégé Raiden return to the PlayStation 2 fold, and their various abilities are further showcased in 150 alternative missions, and across 350 VR missions designed to test their agility, stealth and weapons skills within virtual reality scenarios where the normal rules of combat are altered to push the player to new levels. The game also drops Snake into five new 'Snake Tales' set within environments seen in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Crikey, in the time I've been thinking about what to write (about 2wks) the price of this game has gone from the £18.00 I bought it to almost £60.00, and completely changes my review!!

For £60.00, buy this if you are a mental fanboy completist. Otherwise just get the standard edition, you'll get the main game and a few extras (the VR missions aren't super amazing anyway, more like the same little mission played out over and again with different characters).

If you are desperate for the whole Substance package, you might want to know that you can actually pick up the Xbox version, with an Xbox to play it on for less than the PS2 game at the moment.

So in conclusion, excellenty main game worthy of 5 stars, the 'substance' extra's are in way worth the extra £55.00 you'll pay for 'em so they now get a 0 star rating. Average score for metal gear solid substance - 3

It doesn't get any better than this!!!!11

This is clearly one of the best games on ps2. The first major reason is its storyline which amazes me each time I play through it. The gameplay is not far off either as it is pretty slick and responsive. You can shoot raiden or snakes guns from first person view but you move around in third person. The sound for this game is on par with the graphics which are some of the most amazing graphics to grace the ps2. The cutscenes combine wonderful slick graphics with the most amazing soundtrack seen in a video game. The soundtrack which is composed by harry gregson williams, a top hollywood composer, gives the game an epic feeling never felt before in a video game.
One major downpoint is the length of the game which will only last 10-15 hours. While this may put some gamers off it didn't put me off as i kept going back for the extras and also this version of MGS 2 includes various extra missions which are a wonderful treat.
To conclude, this is my personal favourite game and will be enjoyed by everyone. Go out and buy it, and if you enjoy it buy the other metal gear games too, specifically metal gear solid 3.

 Why Raiden?

You cant dislike the MGS games although having said that this is the worst game in the series but only because the other games are so good. Another thing thats wrong with it is what was Hideo Kojima thinking replacing Solid Snake with whiny man child Raiden, the codec conversations between him and his girlfriend Rose just made me cringe. Overall this is still a pretty good game that fleshes out the story of the series quite a bit definetly worth a play although it may be better to buy the Sons Of Liberty standard edition instead not worth paying over the odds.
