In Okami, the legendary monster Orochi has come back to life and turned the world into a veritable wasteland. Players must assume the role of a wolf, an embodiment of the sun god Amaterasu, capable of wielding unimaginable power. The state of the world lies in gamer's hands as they must fight ominous beings and reclaim the earth from a curse that plagues it. It is crucial to help Amaterasu make the world a place where all living creatures can dwell once again.
Traditional Japanese art comes alive through beautiful scenic 3D levels that have the appearance and texture of paper scrolls brushed with watercolour-like calligraphy art. As a god in the form of a wolf, Amaterasu must reclaim its powers that are scattered throughout the earth, in order to help restore the land to its former beauty. As players progress through the game, they will travel to different regions in search of the other godly embodiments that are hidden, and regain Amaterasu's powers. Rooted in the third person perspective, gamers will need to interact with the people they encounter, building their faith by clandestinely answering their prayers and wishes. As gamers lead Amaterasu through diverse environments, they will come across extraordinary monsters that originated from Japanese folklore
  • Intriguing and alluring main character - Assume the role of the sun god, Amaterasu, who descends upon the earth in the form of a wolf. The Japanese translation of the word wolf is "Okami".
  • Original visuals and revolutionary design - Rich stylized 3D graphics reminiscent of traditional Japanese art created on paper scrolls produce a large variety of stages with a watercolor-esque appearance.
  • Epic tale that combines folklore and mysticism - Okami uses folklore to bring forth an immersive experience.
  • Eclectic and diverse enemies - Diverse lineup of enemies based on Japanese folklore and myths.
  • Diversified gameplay - Defeating monsters requires the usage of not only physical attacks, but Amaterasu's own unique abilities.

In my opinion, it's very easy to give a game top marks if you love it that much. Okami isn't perfect, but no game is and despite that it still deserves top marks considering it is a games on an "old" platform.

This is as close to a Zelda game on the PS2 as you could find (even more so than 'Beyond good and evil'). And that's not a criticism, the quality essence of Zelda is something game makers should strive for. From the slighty annoying (but nonetheless entertaining) tiny companion to the quasi-RPG character development this really hits the nail on the head.

Personally, I don't care for the graphical style. A lot is made of this game's original presentation, and while unique does little to enhance the game itself. It may not have the splendour of a 'Final Fantasy XII' or 'God of War' but by it's own standards is almost perfect.

Of course, graphics do not make a game, and it is playability where Okami shines. An almost perfect learning curve and engaging story with a witty script kept me hooked right until the end. The 'Celestial Brush' aspect is clever and never feels like it disrupts the flow of the gameplay, even during the epic boss battles (the fights with giant spiders are particularly inspired). On occasion I found myself accidently using one technique when I intended to use another but this was the exception rather than the rule and the controls are remarkably responsive.

The sound can become repetitive at times. There is no speech, every character speaks in a kind of made-up babble and I found myself hurrying through conversations but this does little to detract from game; it will never allow you to miss something important.

Overall, this game (considering it has been released towards the end of the PS2s life) really shows the full capabilities of the system and could easily have been a XBox360 or PS3 release.

It is not the kind of game that will last for 100+ hours but neither is it the kind of game that you can fit a quick half hour in.

Okami is entertaining, challenging and a joy to play.

Wow! I don't know where to begin on describing quite possibly one of the most beautiful, engrossing games ever made. At this price it is a bargain and a crime not to buy. The graphics are truly breathtaking and really push the the ps2 to the edge. Gameplay is very original with a unique way of vanquishing enemies and it packs a lot of hours into the game. One of the hidden gems which people should be buyin instead of the tripe of movie cash-ins and yearly updated sports sims.

 Amaterasu shines

To any who think that now we are officially in the next generation the previous one doesn't matter is sorely mistaken. This is a beautiful game like no other. It's humorous, its characters are endearing and you never feel tired of it. You soon become accustomed to the voices and the only negative I can think of is its length. But that only goes to increase its value and the urge to play it all over again.

 Beautiful and captivating

This is by far the best game I have ever played on the PS2. Don't let the fact that it's cell shaded put you off; the graphics are stunningly beautiful, the environments change and move with you. You play as the sun goddess Amaterasu, who has taken the form of a white wolf. Many of the interactive people in the game see you in different forms, depending on their 'faith'. Some will ask you to help them, and when you do their faith boosts your strength and you can learn new fighting abilities and attributes. The brush techniques are original and fun to use. You must find the 13 Gods of the brush to learn new techniques. This is so much fun as you never know what the next one will be. The storyline is immersive and has many twists and turns to keep you hooked. It's also amusing, you will find your companion Issan very entertaining! Boss battles are adrenaline filled and, although not challenging provide a chance to test your abilities and get you used to the brush. The art and design of this game is incredible and it took me about 50 hours to complete, including the secrets and bonuses etc In a word, I would say this game is amazing, and I'm so in love with it that I refuse to lend it to anyone incase they lose it! Buy it NOW!!

 Not to be missed!!

If you are even considering buying this game you should stop considering right now. Just buy it!! I have played this game start to end and can tell you it is one of the best games I have played in a long while. The gameplay is brilliant, nothing ever gets tiresome (not even running, he speeds up the longer he's running and leaves a trail of flowers! Something I never tired of seeing), it's challenging with puzzles and the battle mode is one of the msot original I've come across, being able to stop time to use your pen to add to your attacks. The characters, even the ones you only see once, are amazing. They each have their own unique and fabulous personalities and the fact that they talk jibberish (the audio) doesn't matter!
The graphics are flawless, unique and some of the most beautiful graphics I have seen to PS2 yet and the controls are a dream. None of that annoying camera faffing that really puts you off some games.
It probably could stand to being a bit harder, you don't really die all that often. But in saying that, battles against the bosses are a challange and the game is long without dragging on. There are plenty of side missions to do if you get bored of the main plot and is very open for you to just run around maps like a mad wolf if you want to. You can interact with everything, you can slash trees and houses and feed the wildlife, anything you can think of doing, give it a try, something will probably happen.
