The playstation 2 version of the popular Rock Band game has nearly all of the best elements of what makes the game so addictive - But remember this is the playstation 2, and it can't match the processing power of the PS3, Xbox or Wii, so expect a slimmed down version.
The main plus point for this version is that it allows you to play the game on the PS2 as you may not have one of the more powerful consoles for any reason.
You need the instruments to play the game though - at least the USB microphone as the game will not run with just PS2 controllers . (the game will also support two guitars and drum kit to allow upto four players)
The instruments available for the PS2 rock band can also be used for the PS3 so that may be something to bear in mind if you "move up" to one in the future.
On the downside - there is no online play or features - you cannot download extra tracks (but there are expansion packs available - look for Song Pack 1, AC/DC and soon the Song Pack 2).
Another thing which is missing is the crowd element - with the moe powerful consoles - you can hear the crowd joining in with the vocals in the background - and it does get the adrenalin going somewhat - sadly not on the PS2 - you can hear them cheering and whistling when you are performing well - but thats about all you will get.
There is no character creation, and the band performance you can see when you play any track is just standard - you dont get the interaction of the performers to how well they are playing (no smashed guitars or flying drumsticks in this version).
But these are just minor points - and even if you have played this on the other big 3 consoles - it doesnt really hurt the game -
For the PS2 though - its a cracking version - and good enough to still impress those who have never heard or seen it . and still please those Rock Band veterans alike.
The game itself uses the master tracks from popular rock songs dating as far back as the late 1950's to modern times.
with over 60 tracks there will be something for everyone to enjoy . from mellowed out tracks such as Dont Fear the Reaper - to Heavy floorboard splintering sledgehammers such as Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld.
The wide range of styles, and the ability to select degree of difficulty (and even tutorial and practice modes) will help a rookie player to hone their technique - although the guitar controllers don't really simulate a real guitar - the drum kit controller could really improve someones ability on a real kit.
