War was on the horizon. Seeking to strengthen its base of power, the great Archadian Empire had been invading and subjugating its neighboring kingdoms one by one. The small Kingdom of Dalmasca, the stage on which this tale is set, was one such kingdom.

When the occupying Archadian forces established a new consul in Dalmasca's Royal City of Rabanastre, it caught the attention of Vaan, an urchin living on the streets. To Vaan, the Empire was a hated enemy who had taken the life of his brother-his last surviving family member. Vaan hatched a plan to sneak into the castle housing the new consul and pay him a surprise visit of sorts. Once inside, he thought to unburden the consul of one or two of his treasures. But before he would have the chance, Vaan got far more than he bargained for; a resistance movement of former Dalmascan soldiers rising up against the Archadian Empire was launching an assault!

 A Bargain!!

Wow, what a fantastic price for a game that's only half a year old! Final Fantasy XII (12) is simply beautiful. The settings and characters all brought together by a strong story make one brilliant game.

 Gripping

As much as this game has already captivated me for over 40 hours I feel I cannot quite give it 5 stars. This is entirely because of the characters and story. The protagonist of FFXII is Vaan, another whiney little blonde pretty boy which the series has leant towards using since FFIX and FFX, though Zidane had class and Tidus was quite as much as a douche as Vaan. Basch pretty much is the only character with some style and it's handy how you can change your party leader (most of the time).

As for the story, there's nothing wrong with it really, it's like a cross between star wars and LOTR. You've got your Judges (Darth Vaders) and Nethicite (Ring) and faff about royalty and the usual oppressive empire. Anyway it's fine and everything but no where near as engrossing as previous storylines (apart from X-2, which doesn't exist by the way).

As for the battle system - I was doubtful about the whole real time thing with me being a bit of an FF purist and having visions of WoW-esque repeatedly pressing buttons while slouched in a chair for 72 hours straight. But it turned out great, it's pretty much the same, you still have the atb gauge and the same commands and things, and the AI is completely programmable, in fact you can even go old skool and turn it off to play it like a normal FF and give every command, but you won't get very far. There's an art to it really.

All in all an excellent game gameplay-wise but lacking the expected charm and humour that we know Square can do.

It's kinda like a cast of FFIX's Quina.

Fantastic game. Only arrived last weekend, and it is so addictive. The new battle system is excellent, story and graphics are brilliant as is the voice acting. If you liked FFX, you will love this game.

Ok yes this is graphically one of the best game out today for the PS2 and yes it is alot of fun...However its lacks that certain something that all Final Fantasy games have before it.
This to me wasnt a Final Fantasy game but just another RPG and a real disappointment :( but then again its a Tenner now so by all means go ahead and buy it cos its good for a laugh
