 A brilliant RPG

Digital Devil Saga is admittedly not the BEST RPG I've ever played, but it's certainly up there with them. The unique cel-shaded graphics give it a certain edge that you don't find in other RPG's and sets the tone well. The music is a sort of edgy mix of techno and rock, which seems to fit in some places, but not in others. The voice acting however, is top-notch and really helps you to develop a relationship with the characters.

The gameplay is a lot like other RPG's in that you fight in turn-based battles until you or the enemy is defeated. The main selling point is your character transforms into a demon to combat the enemies. You can learn new abilities for your characters in the mantra grid, which is a lot like Final Fantasy X's sphere grid. This is totally customisable, so you can have one character wield physical and fire attacks while another concentrates on ice and healing spells.

One thing to note, this is a very difficult game. The random encounter rate is a lot higher than other RPG's and you may find yourself seeing the game over screen a lot during boss battles if you don't have the right abilities learnt and equipped.

Apart from this, I strongly recommend having a look at DDS. It is a very enjoyable game, and well worth a play.

This game surely is a great rpg. One of my favourites to date. The SMT series of games is awesome, I just cannot get enough of them. Although unable to match Lucifer's Call, this still proves to be a brilliant game.

If you are into this genre, and are looking for a game that takes you away from your average rpg, then you must play this game. The gameplay is smooth, the story is great, and the dark elements of this game are a breath of fresh air. Definately not an early teens game.

If you are considering purchasing this game, I would urge you to try out Lucifer's Call first. Although not linked to the story in DDS, it will sllow you to start the SMT experience in order of release.

P.S. This is not an easy rpg!

I whole heartedly agree with Dormin87's comments, but would like to say that I was totally amazed at the number of random battles, which seemed to increase as the game progressed. Definitely the highest of any game I've played and I'm an avid RPG player.
