The Darkness is a brilliant FPS/horror game based on the comic-book series of the same name and is one of my favourite games of this generation. Considering how cheap it is it is well worth the money.

The game can get seriously grim and violent at times. This game isn't for the weak-hearting and more than earns its BBFC 18 rating.

The plot begins rather basic. You play Jackie Estacado, a hit man for the mob who is betrayed by his uncle on his 21st birthday.

He soon discovers he has 'The Darkness' inside him which gives Jackie superhuman abilities (don't worry, it does give a pretty convincing explanation as to how he gets them).

The plot then ventures towards the bizarre and down right disturbing around the half way mark. Without giving anything away any spoilers, lets just say that undead German soldiers are a bit of a rarity in games...

There are a few criticisms that i noticed throughout the single player mode. One in particular that got to me was in some cutscenes Jackie's character model looks rushed and VERY rough around the edges. The game overall looks very nice to look at, particularly the New York city streets which, sadly, look completely vacant at times.

For obsessive item collecters (i know i'm not the only one) there are 100 collectables scattered around the game to collect which give you extra goodies. It's not much but it makes you appreciate the work that Starbreeze has put into the game.

Overall, a very enjoyable FPS/horror hybrid with a gritty but well-told story that is more than worth playing, plus its cheap. What more could you possibly want?

Tempted by the ultra-low price here at Play.com I received this game only a few weeks ago, and it took me completely by surprise just how good this game really is.

The atmosphere in this game is no less than excellent, and while I have not (yet) read the cartoon this game is based on I can only assume that it closely follows the style it is drawn. The storyline is ultra-twisted, psychidelic, and above all: Dark, darker, darkest. Darkness everywhere.

This is one of those games where the story is the main attraction. Not the graphics, not the gameplay or your button pressing skills. The game itself is fairly easy but don't let that put you down: You do not want any obstacles to halt the progression of the story.

In short: Get this game, sit back… more »
