I watched this game build up some hype towards it's realise date and bought it the day it game out then I watched it quickly drop in price because of poor sales.... Why I'll never know. It just means that everyone that has waited this long to play the game is picking up an absolute bargain.
As you know the darkness is a first person shooter but aside from all the fire power you can get in the game you also have the power of the darkness at you disposal, meaning you can summon two huge shadowy snakes at your sides which can be used to sliver along walls, ceilings, air vents etc to take your enemy by surprise and rip the hearts out, these creatures also have a variety of powers that you can use such as allowing you to wield demon guns and create black hole where everything and everyone is sucked into it. As well as these snakes you can summon the darkling's each with their own ability, some will open locked areas for you, some fight beside you with big guns, some run towards the enemies taped with dynamite and blow themselves and whoever is in your way to pieces and there are those who put a jackhammer through your enemies chest. These darkling's can come in quite handy as you can imagine, and are fun to watch.
The story in this game is its strongest point you be that involved with it you won't want to put the pad down until you've finished it. The game is full of story that shows you who Jackie is, Where he's come from, the people who is important to him and why, and why he is who he is, even in the loading screens, instead of having to watch some bar fill so you can continue, you have Jackie talking about his past, what he's thinking, or a bit more background to the area you're in.
Aside from the main story there is plenty to keep you entertained elsewhere, such as collecting letters and phone numbers which when dialled in the nearest pay phone treats you to some funny clips/ convocations and also unlocks hidden content, such as gallery images, comics etc. There are also plenty of people walking around mainly in the sub way some of which offer you the chance to do some little tasks for them such as collect items, take care of clips/ convocations and also unlocks hidden content, such as gallery images, comics etc. There are also plenty of people walking around mainly in the sub way some of which offer you the chance to do some little tasks for them such as collect items, take care of thugs, and even collecting pennies before a train runs you over. These are optional and make the game that little more interesting knowing if that you want to you can take a break from the main story.
The graphics in the game are also great in both the details background/ scenery to the people walking around the streets you won't be disappointed. Its great being able to see a hole in a guy's chest where his heart used to be lol.
The only slight problem I had with the game, but I'm not going to let this affect the score I'm given it, was the ending Ill not spoil it for those who haven't played the game yet, but I just wish I had had a bit more control over what happens, Don't get me wrong the ending is great and leaves the game wide open for a second but you will have to play it to understand what I mean.
For the price it is now you're getting a real bargain and a fantastic game with great action and a story that will keep you glued to the screen.
