If you're expecting a game along similar lines of previous Metal Gear's, then like me, you will be disappointed. Sadly, this is a button bashing beat 'em up and is nothing like what MGS fans have come to expect.
The graphics are very good, as you would expect, but this game is similar to DMC and Ninja Gaiden, both of which are far superior to this lack-luster effort.
If you're looking for Metal Gear, you'll have much more fun re-playing the HD Collection or waiting for the next instalment on PS4.

Game mechanics that will change hack and slash genre forever

Much like many franchises the last few months Metal Gear Rising tries something new and succeeds. It has done away with the tired old Snake and it's new posterboy Raiden takes the stage. Fast paced action is the fundamental element which has changed from previous MG titles. Stealth is no longer a key factor, a cyborg ninja that can stop a barge with his bare hands and cut anything in two with his blade isn't going to be creeping around in no box...........oh wait..... and the blade mode is a genius addition to the gameplay which will heavily feature in other hack and slasher for years to come. Its a short game but well polished. open your minds

Although over the top compared to the other metal gear games, this has everything that makes a fantastic metal gear game while also having the best combat of any beat'em up for past few years (maybe tied with DMC).

Anyone who is familiar with the whole metal gear franchise should know of the back story for raiden and this game delivers for any raiden fans out there. The blade mode is an awesome tool and some of the combo's you can pull off in the game are stunning to watch. Story wise this isn't to bad and if you have the patience to wade through the many conversations raiden has with his allies are quite amusing at times. Graphically this game is excellent and the sound and voice acting are pretty decent to. My only downer with this game was the whole blocking aspect, there is no one button for blocking and you have to push in the direction of the enemy and press square at the right times when they attack to parry attacks, sometimes this just doesn't seem to work at all and other times it does which is a low point but you can still avoid attacks by dodging them. I think anyone who has rated this a 1 star game just isn't any good at melee games, this is a metal gear based melee game and not an overall stealth based shooter and is an awesome melee game overall and has some brilliant fighting mechanics to boot. GREAT.

Metal Gear Rising probably throws in a new feel to Hack and Slash games. The game is set a few years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4, and brings back Raiden as the main protagonist in a new cyborg body.

Quinton Flynn returns his voice as Raiden, the child soldier grown into a self-taught cyborg ninja, with deadly and efficient accuracy.
After the Sons of the Patriots system, he provides money for his wife and child by working with Maverick Security Consulting, Inc - A PMC and security company that was dispatched to a developing country to help repair the country after a civil war in 2018.

During his bodyguard job of N'Mani, the country's strong and kind Prime Minister their escort is brought to a halt when it is suddenly attacked by a cyborg by the name of "Jetstream Sam", and an infantry force hired by a PMC called Desperado.

Raiden rushes into the battle to protect the Prime Minister by fighting off the cyborg force. The limo ends up in danger, and N'Mani is taken before Raiden's very eyes by a cyborg called "Sundowner" of the Winds of Destruction. As he goes to try and take him back, he is forced to fight a customized Metal Gear RAY model. After defeating it, Raiden chases after Sundowner and ends up on a moving train.

Unable to save N'Mani from certain fate, he battles with Sam, who was waiting for him on the train. However, Sam defeats Raiden - Cutting out his left eye and left arm in the process, before escaping in a helicopter.

Three weeks later, Raiden is sent to a factory with an all-new, powerful cyborg body that allows him to use the Zandatsu technique to take enemy's electrolytes to restore his body.

That is where the real story begins...

As the game progresses, you can obtain new weapons, sub-weapons, bodies and skills. You can undergo VR Training to get a great feel for the game, and can repeat chapters as you would like.

As for only a four-star rating...
The game is short. Any decent gamer can complete it in under five hours on normal. I completed it twice in eight. However, it has plenty of potential to be re-playable, and there is some DLC coming out soon, alongside the initial day-one DLC that allowed you to download Raiden's MGS4 body.

The system of 'Cut-And-Take' is excellent in my opinion, being able to from any direction, in any way, and cut apart nearly any object or person.

The story isn't worth much compared to the other Metal Gears, but it's interesting to hear about Raiden's past, and how cyborg technology works and the such.

Keep in mind that this is NOT Metal Gear -Solid-. It is Metal Gear -Rising.- It is a different game, following the same universe.

If you're a Metal Gear fan, there's no harm in picking this up, although you may want to consider waiting until the price drops a bit. Either way, it is certainly enjoyable. I don't regret the purchase, and I'm likely to keep it a long while longer, yet.

From the beginning when this game was first revealed it was made known it was a hack and slash.
It is a spin off from the standard MGS line, it's not fair to slate it because it is not the game you wanted it to be.
If you don't want a game like this then wait for MGS 5 which has been announced.
This is Metal Gear Rising not Metal Gear Solid, different games!
It's the chance to experience the MG world from a different view point. Metal Gear has always been over the top and this keeps up that wacky traditon.
Definetly worth a try if you are an MG fan or just enjoy a good fighting game.

  Big dissapointment

was really looking forward to this and when you compare it the other games in the metal gear series it just seems very computerised and when you see an enemy you dont run to hide a divert there attention its just a case of slice slice slice and move on, one thing i cant stnd in this game and other games is when you kill someone why does the body dissapear and in this his game they explode, body vanishes and a squirt of blood and even that vanishes so the floor is always bloody tidy, it has a hint of devil may cry too it in ways you can attack in mid air and so on- youll have to play it to understand all the reviews and points that people make but ive rather spend 40 pounds on crysis 3 or just wait to play the ne metal gear.
