Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world.

When a power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply he sparks an invasion that turns the country into a warzone. But for you, international crisis is all upside: you are a mercenary, and you profit from chaos. Mercenaries 2 features a slew of potential clients, all willing to pay you to do their dirty work. These are world powers with deep pockets, deep grudges, and enough arms and ammo to start World War III. This is your kind of environment.

Mercenaries 2 features the latest and most dangerous in civilian and military tech, everything from shiny new sports cars, to the future-tech satellite-guided bunker-busting mini-nuke. Tanks, APCs, boats, luxury automobiles - you name it, you can have it delivered to you in real-time. And if you run out of cash you can always 'acquire' the gear you need in the field.

If you see it, you can buy it, steal it, or blow the living crap out of it. Play your own way, or play with the help of a friend in the new co-op multiplayer mode.

You are not a soldier. You don't have to play by anyone's rules. You have your own code: you will fulfill the terms of the contract, no matter what. Not everyone in the world of Mercenaries is as honorable. Everyone will try and screw you, given the chance. They think they can get away with it, but they don't know rule #1 for mercenaries: everyone pays!

Work for the Highest Bidder: You decide which factions to work for and when. From one-off pick-up jobs to complex multi-objective missions your choices will decide how the game progresses and which faction wins the war.

New Toys: Over 130 vehicles from civilian cars to tanks and choppers plus all the destructive weaponry you can handle from pistols to rocket launchers.

Next Gen Destruction: Take down any building in the world piece by piece and see them crumble with fantastic effects. Not just cool to look at, destruction can be used to take out enemy forces and change the landscape of the battlefield.

Massive Open World: Play across cities, jungles, lakes, mountains and a range of terrain in between throughout a Venezuela that is larger than all the Mercenaries maps combined.

Online Co-op Multiplayer: You no longer have to go it alone. Invite a friend to jump in and help you fight your way to the top.

         Not a very nice game.

I'm struggling to find the words for this game, clean words anyway. I was really looking forward to this, and what I got was a game that truly should not have been released in it's current state. Granted I've only played it for about three hours before giving up, but here are some of my findings based on the limited time I've spent with it:
The GPS will send you in a direction that the game will not let you go. There is road, but the half witted bint that co-ordinates your missions will say her signal is bad, and the game will physically not allow you to progress toward the objective.
When you aim directly at an enemy and have your aim confirmed by the reticle turning red only about 1 in 5 shots will hit your target, although the enemies can hit you with no problem. If my character is supposed to be an experienced mercenary it should be a given that he can shoot straight. As it stands it's like he's shooting whilst wearing someone elses glasses.
One mission prompted me to throw a smoke grenade into a target area to signal a pilot. I did this around thirty times, with the game each time not recognising that it was landing within the target. I tried it later, doing exactly same thing, and it worked first time.
I entered an area occupied by a group who were supposedly friendly, yet they started shooting at me. Closer inspection showed that they weren't actually shooting at me, they were in fact shooting wildly, lobbing grenades and shouting at an enemy that wasn't there. I couldn't resist giving one of them who was lying down shooting at what was possibly his own front door a swift kick in the conkers which did raise a smile, but ultimately proved to be more trouble than it was worth.
Gameplay aside the look of the game is also very bad. I didn't buy a PS3 and an HDTV to play games that look inferior to ones I was playing on the PS2 years ago.
If you buy this game then you're going to have a bad time, unless you're REALLY easily pleased.

Fantastic, don't listen 2 anyone else

I bought this game a week ago and its great!!!, a bit like just cause but 10 times better, u can blow up anything like battlefield:bf u can free rome like gta4 and the graphics are crisp clear and very good, it does glitch a little bit but it doesnt effect the game wat so ever. A very good game 10/10, i love it, and lots of missions and mini missions so it will keeep u entertained for a long time, 2 player co-op is good but not great but everything else is fantastic

some glitches but massive mindless fun

I will admit this game has glitches and could have been more polished but give it a chance (unlike some of the hardcore chimps) and you will find a brilliant, explosive, action packed game.
Massive map ( 4 times gta4 ), great disructable enviroment, loads of cool vehicles, good range of weapons and best of all, the airstikes and nuke bomb.
If you can look past the minor faults and like blowing the crap out of stuff then get this game and whack up the volume and nuke some buildings....yesss!!

Not all its cracked up to be

Having got the game as soon as it was out i started to play, the controls are easy to learn and its fun to play but its lacking something doesnt seem as good as the first one and i also find a lot of the missions rather annoying. Also after only playing it for 3 hours iam 25% finished it ,looks like a very short. Its not what i thought it was going to be very dissapointed. And for a next gen game the graphics arent that great.

I'm sick of people slagging this game off for stupid reasons. To the previous reviewer: You can't go everywhere on the map TO BEGIN WITH, if you lose signal you either leave that area or destroy the nearby radar jammer, then you are free to explore. Simple. Mercenaries on the XBox was the best game I played and the most innovative, and it was highly regarded as a groundbreaking game. Rest assured if you were a fan of the first, this will not dissapoint, the graphics are sweet as hell, not the best on the PS3 admittedly but this is because it was a "semi" multiplatform title to come out on the PS2 also, the physics engine on the PS2 is from the first game however, so whilst graphics may not be insanely sexy, the physics are definately next-gen.

Here is the biggest difference, Mercs1 had the deck of cards system, this one doesn't, the focus is more on factional warfare and you managing your contracts, the game is still big with plenty of missions andeven more side missions, people have a habit of skipping these however and only doing the mandatory missions, finishing the game too early and moaning it was fast. The side missions are not just padding though, they are fun, in some cases they are more challenging than main missions... bottom line is that deck of cards was fun, but unrealistic, you are a merc, not a superhero, you do contracts for money from certain factions, the UN won't hire one man to solve all the world's problems, Mercs2 is more plausible on a whole in that respect.

        What's new:
        - Vehicles, there are waaaay more here, helis, tanks, boats, bikes, cars, trucks, and lots of each, it simply puts GTA4 to SHAME, the vehicles are awesome with gadgets and weapons and they look sweet, wait till you see the Panzercycle (tank-bike), worth buying the game for this alone.

        - Allies, you get a base at the start and recruit a team to assist you to an extent, a heli pilot, a mechanic and an engineer all of whom will offer you challenges with wagers to make you more money, and also get you more items and contacts. Overall it makes the game more involving and these minigames are a very fun way of unlocking items or making money, not like boring chores some sandbox games offer.

-Map, the map here is far larger that it's predecessor, not as large as GTA San Andreas, however, I believe it is larger than GTA4, don't take my word on this though, but it certainly seems that way.

-damage, physics is awesome here, you can destroy anything, incindiary explosions will fan out and burn any trees nearby and the fire spreads. There are lots of airstrikes, and yes a nuke too. (Well, pretty much something that looks exactly like one, you'll see).

-hijacking, this is a little more challenging than in the previous title, when you try to jack a tank or chopper it will initiate a minigame with button sequences, it makes it more challenging and the animation of these mini battles look fun, you also use a grapple hook to jack copters which means no more luring them in and running to high ground to get them so you can expect to pilot these alot more.

In short, this is the game GTA4 should have been, it is a sandbox game with alot to do, and it is fun even after completion. Lots of innovative side quests, costume and item unlocks, future downloadable content, and online adds to playability. It is unrealistic enough to offer silly entertainment and has a light-hearted violent humour whereas the gritty story and sterile realism of GTA4 made it simply boring. If you like free-roaming games with open-ended gameplay and GTA4 didn't satisfy you, this here is your baby, buy it and indulge in mayhem. Plus, one more thing... yes, Peter Stormare still voices Mattias. Cool.
