I own all next gen consoles but I just bought a PS3 a few days ago and I had one game with it: Uncharted. It was great but over very quickly... So I bought LittleBigPlanet at the urging of my friend because he wanted to play co-op.
I wasn't really looking forward to the game.. I thought the actual gameplay would be sub par and floaty, while the creation tools would either be too limited or too hard to get in to.
Basically I thought it was being over hyped by a bunch of Playstation fans simply because it was on the PS3.
I was VERY, wrong.
This game is absolutely fantastic! From the introduction itself (which is actually a level) you can tell the experience is going to be unique and engaging and from there on it's a really funny, cute ride though a load of varied, physics based levels.
There's plenty of jumping (of course) but there's also some really unique ideas and challenges due to your characters ability to grab and the brilliant physics engine. Wait till you see four sackpeople speeding backwards in a cardboard car over a fiery pit!
This really is platforming at it's finest and sits right next to Super Mario Galaxy in my book (despite the two games being rather different).
The level creation tools are so simple to get into and yet the complexity you can achieve is amazing... in fact the entirety of the main single player game was made with it! I even just spent the last day making a hugely complex and long level... and I've barely touched most of the items or the physics based gameplay.
The integration of online is fantastic and so smooth. And free (I'm really loving this about my PS3). On the third level I noticed the 'Play Online' button for the first time and then I got to play co-op on that very level online.
Every game is made better with other people but wow... it's so light hearted and FUN... even when all four of your team mates keep falling into pits of fire you can't help smiling.
All of the levels are open online too so you don't have to worry about not getting far in the single player as long as whoever you're playing with has gotten further than you.
And it's brilliant checking out what other players come up with the online levels. Whether it's a piece of music that plays as you ride a car, a tricky platformer like the NES games of old or an incredibly inventive level that involves co-operating with friends to steer a huge tank and dodge incoming explosives (I was in stitches at how much we kept dying on the last one).
And the Sackpeople are so cute! Once again customisation comes into play so you can personalise your own person to a very great degree. Hats, hair, trousers, tails, teeth, skin... it's all there! You can even plaster them with stickers and save different outfits.
It also turns out you can control their hands, facial expressions and also make their head/body move around with the sixaxis. It's always great coming to the end of a level and seeing everyone make their sack people dance... or cry when they lose! Plus when you all lack microphones it's a handy way to direct other people.
Honestly this is a fantastic game that just keeps making me smile.
Its a shame that Wii/360 only people can't play it. But then that just means Sonys got a great exclusive :]
I have to mention though that local co-op can't be played with non official Sony controllers. I have no idea why they'd do that when the PS3 can register them.. but you can't move your character at all with them. Kinda sucky, especially on a game so steeped in co-op fun but I guess it's a good excuse to upgrade to the Dualshock 3?
But in the end this is still an amazing game, one I can see myself still playing in 10 years time. Buy it :]
