Sometimes it is put to use to great effect such as in Beneath A Steal Sky and Chaos Engine. But often it is used as little more than a varnish for generic, middling titles to help them stand out. Case in hand Damnation. It's not bad per se. It's just that it has all been done elsewhere and better. Third person shooter? Wait for the new Red Faction. Verticality? Tomb Raiser. Prince of Persia. Mixture of these? Infamous. Damnation is damned by its lack of ideas. Steampunk? Feels like it ran out of steam. Bargain bin here it comes. Hey at least it'll have Matt Hazzard and Quake Wars for company.
