Steampunk offers a rarely tapped cultural ambience and visual aesthetic. Sometimes it is put to use to great effect such as in Beneath A Steal Sky and Chaos Engine. But often it is used as little more than a varnish for generic, middling titles to help them stand out. Case in hand Damnation. It's not bad per se. It's just that it has all been done elsewhere and better. Third person shooter? Wait for the new Red Faction. Verticality? Tomb Raiser. Prince of Persia. Mixture of these? Infamous. Damnation is damned by its lack of ideas. Steampunk? Feels like it ran out of steam. Bargain bin here it comes. Hey at least it'll have Matt Hazzard and Quake Wars for company.
A western shooter combined with gravity defying motocycle stunts sounds a good mix but believe me its not. This game deserves half a star and only that because (at times) the graphics are decent.
The shooting in this game is so bad it makes the gunplay in Farcry 2 look superb. The guns sound and look ridiculous and seem to do little physical damage except three bullets will put down most enemies even on insane difficulty. The game description boasts great acrobatics but they look simply terrible. Most of the time when your climbing walls parts of your body pass into the wall as if its not there. And the glitches dont end there, your comrades will occassionally completely disappear and teleport to some random area, usually needing healed. Now to the motorbike. I mean i've never ridden one but even I know if you drive into a wall at 200mph you wont just bounce off and be able drive away again but here you can. And frequently the front wheel of the bike just gets permanently stuck in some object and you have to just leave it.
The claim that levels are huge is simply untrue. Sure there's plenty of scenary but the size of the actual accessable playing area is pretty small and mainly consists of barren wasteland with the occassional rock. The only choices available during gameplay are whether to continue torturing yourself or simply burn the disc.
In short this is possibly the worst game i've played on PS3 to date, there is no freedom, the acrobatics and motorcycle sections are terrible, graphics are PS2 standard and gunplay is shocking. I would have more fun playing with an empy cardboard box.
If you are looking for a western shoote buy PS2 game GUN and wait for the arrival of Red Dead Redemption.
The best way to describe this game is 'Prince of Persia with guns'
It is one of those game you can pick up at any time and just play. Its not bad at all. The controllers take a little while to get use to and the shooting feels like there is something missing from it but I cant put my finger on it. The AI could have been done a little better, if you shoot them in the leg for example all they do is look around. Others just stand there motionless, but you can get over that very quickly.
Tried the multiplayer but there was nobody online, however if you are a big fan of online coop I would check this game out. It is fun especially with another player.
Im going to say that this has to be one of the most repetative and enoyingly stressful games iv'e ever played. I was really dissapointed when playing to find that when shooting at the enemy they just stood there and let you shoot them. The guns are ok, though could have be alot better.
Why this is so repetative, is if you get quite far through the level and die by getting shot you'll start back at the checkpoint which may be far from where you died have to start it all again, and it is more enoying when on insane difficulty, as it takes less shots to be killed, though the enemy stay the same as it will still take far more shots to kill them.
The only good things about this game is you can get trophies, which is the only reason why i play to get them, cant think of anything else, i would only get this game if it was £10 or under.
PS2 graphics with PS1 game play, not even a good story to boost the game from the lows you encounter in the 1st 10 mins. Thank god i didnt buy new is all i can say even at £15 it too much money to wate on such a awfull game.
