Exceptional game, like the first, with small issues

| | See all SiScott's reviews (98)

This is an exceptional game, with a strong story which pushes the story from Resistance1 nicely forward. Ive heard complaints about the story being too short, but compared to the LONG Resistance1 campaign, I felt this was a nicer length.

Resistance1 seemed to drag eventually, where as Resistance2 feels more compact and well structured.

The graphics are a slight mixed back. There are times when they look amazing and the sheer scope of the locations and enemies looks immense... then other times they look dated and the areas look a bit bland.

Thankfull for the most part the graphics are great.

There are TWO major improvements over (the also amazing, but flawed) Resistance 1.

Firstly the check points are a lot more frequent, so you don't have to redo HUGE levels anymore if you die. Which is a blessing!! Secondly the health bar has been removed and replaced by just taking cover and letting yourself heal.

However, once again (like the first one) Resistance2 is not perfect and unfortunately it has carried over one of the major issues of the first game.

Once again, this can be a brutal and painful game to play in terms of difficulty. Most of the time the game hits a perfect mix of enemy levels and making it a challenge.

But unfortunately you still get quite a few instances when you see HORDES of enemies coming at you, including easy and HARD enemies and think "you have got to be kidding me". But all these situations can be overcome with persistance and using the right weapon.

There are also times when you arent sure what you are meant to be doing to get through an area, or kill a boss and find yourself frustrated about it... I had to resort to online guides a few times.

Now to talk about the weapons and ammo...

...the weapons here are even better then what we had in Resistance1. A wide variety of choice, ability and quirkness are on offer and improved versions of older weapons too.

Unfortunately (also) there are two issues with weapons and ammo. For some reason the have chosen to restrict you to ONLY two weapons in R2. This removes the fun which R1 offered in choice and sometimes this can make life very hard.

I found myself in numerious situations where my ammo actually ran out and I was unable to find anymore weapons or ammo lying around. Now this was not due to bad ammo management.

It was generally a combination of HORDES of enemies and simply not having enough ammo. It was only pure luck I managed to progress, as this happened a lot just after a check point.

This is why the game looses one star.

You have a game with beautiful graphics, a strong storyline, awesome action and a decent challenge which improves on the first in almost all ways.

But its let down by being too brutal in given situations, confusing in others, restricting your weapon choice and unrealistic ammo supplies ingame.

Bottom line...... the resistance franchise is awesome and both games are worth playing, and even their issues are worth enduring.

  Better than Killzone 2

God knows what the other reviewer was talking about.

The game play on this is loads smoother than Killzone 2 and the guns are better. The story to me, isn't that gripping, but they aren't usually that good in this kind of game anyway.

Worth a tenner and you'll get a few good hours out of it.

  even better than resistance 1

the game outperforms its predecessor on all levels, particulary the part in the swamp with the 'invisible' monsters

  Yes it is that good

Forget gears 2 this game reigns supreme on the ps3. Insomniac have improved everything in the game from the last, visuals stand up there with the likes of half life 2, sound is awesome feels like a real warzone sometimes the gameplay feels a little linear but what fps or shooter doesn't these days. The campaign mode beats short of duty 4 easily and you have the added bonus of the multiplayer if you are connected. All round resistance 2 is definately the way forward for ps3 exclusives, what a game.

Overall a very good game, game play and graphics. However it does seem to lose some of the mystery that fall of man had, it does reinvent itself and has some excellent suprises, weapons (i.e magnum gun with the exploding rounds) and the chimera has definetely evolved (i.e the chimera dont just run at you aimlessly like they did in fall of man, they actually try to kill you). Its safe to say that there will be a resistance 3, when you complete the game, you will see why.

A GOOD SEQUEL TO A POTENTIALLY GREAT SERIES OF GAMES

This the second in the resistance games provides hours of great entertainment but i feel the developers let their standard slip. In some areas of the game the graphics seemed like a PS2 game and the story was not as engaging as the first but nonetheless was very much a fun FPS. Enjoy
