One of the most strikingly beautiful titles ever developed for the Wii, Monster Hunter 3: Tri depicts a living, breathing ecosystem where man co-exists with the fantastic beasts that roam both the dry land and the brand new sub-aqua environment - a first for the series.

As a Hunter you will need track, set traps, and either capture or slay a variety of majestic monsters. When a monster is slain, the hunter can carve off their horns, scales and bones, which can be used to create a huge variety of weapons and armour.

Monster Hunter use's the Wii functionality to its fullest, showcasing beautiful graphics and a dynamic ecosystem. Monster Hunter Tri allows for unparalleled co-op gameplay, both on and offline. Hunt with up to four players online or two players offline in arena mode. Also, in Arena mode, you'll have the ability to save your character's information to the Wii Remote directly so you're always ready to play at a friend's house!

Do you have the courage to hunt the monsters that roam this world? It won't be easy - the monsters are strong and numerous. Yet by hunting together with your friends, or braving it solo with your ChaCha Fighting Companions, there is no monster that cannot be defeated. Sharpen your favourite weapon and invite your friends, hunting season is about to begin...
  • Co-op Hunting: In the hunt, you're never alone. Hunt together with up to 4 players online, with the availability for 2-player split-screen. In single-player mode, you even have the ability to hunt with AI-controlled characters named ChaCha.
  • Monsters with Unique Abilities and Attacks: Monsters have unique and dynamic personalities, abilities and defenses, increasing in complexity as the player progresses. They camouflage themselves to ambush hunters, but will flee or call for help if outmatched. You need to know your monsters to be ultimate hunter.
  • Immense Living, Breathing World with Ecosystem: Monsters interact amongst each other in a living breathing ecosystem, complete with food chain. Monsters have stamina, migrate and even attack one another, the strong feeding on the weak.
  • New Underwater Maps: For the first time ever in any Monster Hunter game, you will be able explore land and sea and hunt monsters of the deep.
  • Fully Customizable Equipment: With seven weapon categories - including the all-new "Switch Axe" - and new armor and weaponry created from the remains of slain monsters, there are almost limitless opportunities for
  • equipment customization.
  • Choice of Controls: Play with either the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, or with the Classic Controller

 Great game but best online.

After having spent 300+ hours on the Japanese version, I can tell you this game will eat your life. The offline mode offers a good introduction for those not familiar with the series but online is where it's at. Taking down one of the big monsters as a team is tremendously satisfying. Add to that online quests that change every week, albeit some just on a four-weekly cycle, and you have hundreds of hours of hunting ahead of you.

Sadly it does lack the variety of weapons and armour that Freedom Unite has, but not everything can be perfect. Also the split-screen two player is only the arena mode, where two players are in an enclosed area to fight a monster. Not quite the REAL Monster Hunter.

Why four stars? The two reasons stated above pretty much. Also alternative colour monsters would have been nice.

Still, those playing the Japanese version have to pay an online premium, and outside Japan...Capcom seems to have decided NOT to charge! Lucky for you!

If you get one game for your Wii in 2010, this should be it. Remember it's not a kids game though.

300+ hours and still going strong!

I only write short reviews on games I REALLY enjoy. MHTri is quite simply one of the most addictive online co-op games I have ever played. I bought a Wii especially for this game and I wasn't disappointed at all. It is a MUST for all Wii owners of ALL ages. Enjoy at your peril though, say goodbye to your social life...

 Great game so far

I've clocked up about 5 hours on this game so far and I'm really enjoying it so far. It is a little slow to get going, there are a lot of villagers to talk to and to help you understand the game and give you snippets of info. I've been out exploring my world and had to deal with some monsters, none to difficult to dispose of yet. There appears to be a fair bit of game play under just going out killing monsters, such as trading and fine tuning your weapons. I'm just starting to be given quests, so the game is picking up speed and the enjoyment is just growing. The graphics for this game are excellent. Controls via the remote and nunchuck are fine. Sound effects are good and realistic. When fighting you feel your character is quite slow at wielding and attacking with his sword, but when the sword is as big as the hunter, the realism hits you that, 'hey, if was carrying a sword my height and made of iron, I'd be a bit cumbersome and not throwing it around like a butter knife' So in that respect very realistic. My only real niggle, is the text for the menus and speech are quite small and takes some straining to read it all fluently. I guess on 40" screen this may not be a problem, and our 26" is ok, but a smaller sized screen may become a slight pain. All in all a very good serious game to add to the library of more comical/cartoony games that fill the Wii shelf in our house. Worth buying if you are prepared to put in some time before the action gets really going. Although a 4* has been given by me, it really deserves a 4.5.
