Why can't people read the back of the box!?

Top 100  Reviewer Top 10 Games Reviewer

I have heard nothing but critiscism for this game since it came out, and having just treated myself to this addition the the resi series, I'll give everyone a fully unbiased review, because despite being a religous fan of the series (and yes, I thought the G-Con games were foul, bar the marginally good dead aim), i decided to actually follow the progress of the game and read the box before purchasing it!!!!

The game follows, as you would have learned from the previous reviews, the exploits of Rebecca, Chris, Jill, Billy, Carlos, and 'others' throughout a retelling of the stories told in Resi titles 0, 1, and 3. It plays out as a 'less linear' lightgun shooter, in that you can swivel your view round using the nunchuk, and fire using the remote, even uncovering alternate routes if you are looking the right way at the right time. Blasting creatures as you go with a variety of weapons, your aim is to survive each episode intact alongside your partner, usually ending in a confrontation with a staple boss of the series. Between this, simultaneous events are revealed to the player of sides of the Umbrella story that they never saw, including Wesker's true motivations, resulting in a playable culmination that takes place at the main umbrella HQ.

The graphics of the game are superb, taking the visuals from the gamecube resident evil remake and zero, and recreating them in lavishly detailed full 3D. The monsters still look wonderful, with the usual high quality animation you expect. The sound also hits a high here, using a more sythesised light-rock twist on the usual resi tracks, but unforunately, the awful voice acting is indeed back, and at one of it's worst (any fan should be able to look past this though!). Resi 3 also looks superb I should note, all done up in remake graphics and with new less polygonal carlos and jill character models...the production values reek of quality throughout. Now, how does it play?

Fortunately, it works incredibly well. The control scheme is dead tight and feels comfortable and natural within minutes of picking up. All the controls are located in convenient places and the aim is just sensitive enough to enable sharpshooters to show off without making it too jerky for newcomers. Context sensitives are introduced too, and if you have defense items on you, you can choose to use them as you're about to be attacked by pressing A and B on the remote simultaneously, then being treated to a cool scene of said monster being trashed with a stylish reverse kick or knife slash to the face.

Extra weapons and health are found along the way by breaking stuff with your guns, and can be picked up by pointing at them and pressing A. Overall, the controls and gameplay style really mesh to create a highly playable, enjoyable title.

As for replay value, fans are treated to tons of files and collectibles to discover, different routes to explore, high scores (and yes, you can try for A grades again!) on each level, secret levels and characters, not to mention the 12 or so missions in the main game (which can be played through with one of two different characters!).

So in short, despite not being "proper resi", capcom have created a brilliant fan-title here, oozing with quality presentation and replay value, and providing hours of great fun. Fair enough if you want to knock it, but have the sense to read the box first!!!

Pros:
+ Fun and addictive gameplay.
+ Shooting controls are tight, responsive, and easy to pick up.
+ Tons of replay value and unlockables.
+ Superb story development for fans.
+ Excellent graphics and presentation.

Cons:
- Critical headshots hard to score.
- No RE2 or CV sections?
- Bosses not as exciting as actual missions.

Im so annoyed with half the ppl reviewing this game that its made me actually write my very first review on this web site. STOP COMPARING THIS GAME TO RESI 4. Speaking as a person who has worked in a game shop for over 10 years. THIS IS A LIGHT GUN GAME not the usual kind of resi title. You point and shoot and thats basically it. if you are old enough to remember operation wulf and time crisis in the arcades and loved them ( as i did ) then get this game. its that simple. Im also a huge resi fan so to combine the two genres makes this a dream come true for me. ( Ok lets not mention the awful ps2 titles ) Its not gonna take you as long as other resi games to complete cause its nothing like them. buy this and the wii zapper and enjoy it for what it is and stop complaining.  This is Resident Evil - Time Crisis edition, not a sequel!

Some of the reviewers seem to be misinformed about this game. They think because it's "on rails", that it is bad. Well let me tell you all this is not a classic Resident Evil style of movement.

Think Time Crisis and House of the Dead. You know, those games you can play in the arcade before you go bowling or watch a film. This game uses the technology of the Wii's motion sensor to provide you a highly interactive shoot fest featuring scenarios from the classic Resident Evil games. You cover the events that occur in Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil (following the design of the Gamecube remake), Resident Evil 3 and a new scenario helping the avid follower of the story, reasons to why the "Umbrella Corporation" collapse, and give foundations to Wesker's story on Resident Evil 4.

This game definitely is a must buy for those who have been following the series since the 1990's, as it is very nostalgic, and fighting old bosses in a new and exciting way can prove very exciting. You can tell the creators were looking forward to also recreate some of the scenes, like the "first zombie" scene from the very first game. This should also be recommended to those who are new to the series, or have only played Resident Evil 4, as it is a fast, interactive and modern, so will have you up to speed on the classic story much faster than buying all the old games and spending days on them, although if you enjoy the more complex controls of the old games, I suggest you also buy them all too as Gamecube discs for the Wii.

The other advantage to mention is that you get to see and play scenarios as Chris Redfield. He will be the main character on Resident Evil 5, so this game is a good opportunity to learn his story, his personality, and why he is so much more cooler than Leon :D

The one gripe I have is the fact that there are no scenarios from Resident Evil 2 or Code Veronica featured in this game, this would have been a nice addition to the game as it would fully explain the story to date. But I guess they will be paired with Resident Evil 4 and 5 in a sequel to the Umbrella Chronicles, seeing as Capcom are a business.

To summarise, an excellent game from an excellent company, making good use of the Wii's functionality and helping to revive the classic light gun games we were all going crazy at the arcades for over 10 years ago. As long as you go in with the mindset that this ISN'T the follow up to Resident Evil 4 like some disappointed reviewers seem to think, then you are more than likely going to enjoy this. If you are looking for the sequel to 4, then you will need to get a 360 and wait for the release (hopefully) next year.

I AM GLAD I DID NOT LISTEN TO REVIEWS FOR THIS GAME

I read reviews for this saying it was not very good! was i put off of coarse not,i bought it and think it is a great game, loads to do hard to complete what more could you want.I dont want a game you can complete in 15 mins like other people i like a challenge and this game gives it! whats the point in spending loads of cash on a new game that can be completed in a day (95% of ps3 games) what i am saying is this dont listen to negative comments if you like resi evil you will love this, simple as that.
