I was going nuts when i didn't get a wii at launch. And still 7 months on at time of writing Play have just got in stock.
Owning all the Next Gen consoles I did get super hyped about the Wii, and waited 20 days to find one at normal price.
Its not hard to see why its out of stock and only recently more readily available, as the PS3 an X360 battle it out for the hardcore gamer and to be the DO IT all multimedia box, the wii stuck to being simplay a games console which reflects in its great price. As a next Gen console though, its edge is its in your home multiplayer experience that excels. If I have any friends over, we're always on the Wii. Otherwise it sits idle, the 360 is played regularly on allsorts of games and my PS3 is switched off most of the time except for when I catch a bluray movie.
You can't play DVD's, CD's, next Gen DVD's. It doesn't have Dolby Digital or High Definition output. But does all this matter?
Well a little bit, but where it looses here it makes up for in playability, its games are so far simple and you can dip in and out of them.
Wii sports is very good, all though a bit of a tease. Tennis is only playable to a maximum of 5 games. I'd like to see 5 sets!! Again golf is 9 holes maximum. Boxing is great and very hardwork and if you do a Wii fitness test everyday then you can expect to get fitter and loose weight.
Whats better is that with games with wii in the title will use mii's - All you do is spend a bit of time making your own mii to your likeness. So, play some tennis and you'll see your silly character that looks just like you, flapping around after the ball in slo-mo after the point is won. It has me and my family in stiches. Or in Baseball, your team will be all the Mii's you created on your console so you'll be cheering for someone as they step up to bat.
Boxing is also a great laugh and a work out again, only playable as best of three, but very funny. And very hardwork
The virtual Console is OK and does have some games worth downloading - but you'll need a £20 virtual console controller to play them. Donkry Kong Country from the NES a highlight.
The internet browser is actually very good far better than the PS3's attempt. the point a click makes it very easy to enter web addresses rather than a D pad.
The wii graphically is average, but again, nintendo's focus is about playability, but playing games with a bit more depth like Zelda or Red Steel do show how if the playability is wrong the poor graphics can be frustrating.
Playing for long periods can be tiring, and as I got our wii 3 days before Xmas and tested it with my wife. I literally pulled my shoulder muscles playing the very funny and crazy Rayman Raving Rabids - I was trying to throw a cow as far as possible using the Remote as lasso - put my heart and soul in.
Need for Speed Carbon is a bit of a niche game, aimed at teenage boys. Its a very average racing game and the control system on the Wii frustrating. But if your buying for a teenage boy they'll love it
Overall, if gaming is something you do casually you'll love it. If you want challenging games in HD that take over your life you'll want a PC or X360.
Oh, and playing Zelda with the remote was very comfortable, literraly lying down easy.
