Deadly Creatures is a very unique game with a fantastic atmosphere and amazing graphics that have a brilliant sense of style. They remind me of Metroid Prime at times.
The gameplay is split between adventuring (which I loved since it was so atmospheric) and fighting. It's basically a brawler, which is not something I usually enjoy, but the atmosphere combined with very good animations and well-done motion controls contributed to fighting I actually liked (the scorpions finishers are great fun).
Both of the two playable characters have different styles of play; the spider is very agile but weaker while the scorpion is more of a powerhouse (and it can block). Plus since you switch between the two each chapter you never get bored of one style.
The story is very simple but told in an absolutely fantastic way; you hear the movements and conversations of the two human characters as you creep through the desert. This is how games should tell stories as far as I'm concerned.
It does suffer from some flaws though. There is slow down. Quite frequently. And it's sometimes really bad. The camera can be a complete pain in tight areas but luckily you can recentre it.
And lastly, there are numerous clipping glitches such as comboing an enemy into a wall and then they get stuck.
It's sad too because these flaws pull you out of the incredibly immersive atmosphere that Rainbow Studios have created.
But in the end I think it overcomes it's flaws to be worth a purchase. Hopefully it sells well enough to get a more polished sequel though.
A very original concept of playing as a scorpion and spider, which may turn some arachnophobes off, has been extremely well executed. Seeing both the desert and human worlds (a gas station) from creepy crawlies perspectives is spectacular. The visuals are up there with the best on Wii, and the animation from all the insects is unrivaled in any game. Gameplay (which I believe makes or breaks a game) is solid, with both protagonists having different play styles. With the tarantula, you will be leaping from vine to vine, webbing enemies from long distance, and crawling everywhere. The scorpion is slower, but you have different abilities, such as burrowing and awesome finishers.
There are some truly inspired moments, such as finding a discarded mobile phone in the desert. Then as you approach it, it starts ringing and lights up - great touch!
Billy Bob Thornton and Dennis Hopper provide the voices of the two humans in the game, which adds to the indie movie feeling and helps keep players interested in what will happen next.
Controls are good - this is not a waggle fest or button masher. Occassionally there are slight problems of wii remote movements registering correctly, but this is not a deal breaker, and may be the fault of the Wii and not the game.
Buy this game! Its a lot of fun, satisfying and creative. There is nothing like it on Wii or any other console. I hope they make a sequel, in which you can play as even more bugs.
This is one of the better 3rd party games out there for Wii. THQ have done a great job of creating an immersive, atmospheric landscape that is like nothing else out there. The story doesn't happen to you, it happens around you as you just go about living your life as an insect, which is a novel and bold idea. The art direction is excellent and the gameplay is fairly intuitive if a little repetitive. Although the way the moves are drip fed to you throughout the game keeps you interested. I would really recommend this to any Wii owner who is looking for something a little more adult than most of the Wii games out there.
Like the title says, i have no real issues with this game and i think it truly is a great game unlike anything thats out there at the moment. the realism in terms of graphics for a wii game is outstanding. It is throughly enjoyable and although it can get a bit repetitive, this doesn't stop this game from being one of the greater wii games. The creatures you play with look and move very realistically but this is where my issue comes in. The description for this game claims you have a choice of 3 playable creatures when really its only 2. The scorpion and Tarantula. You do not get to play as a snake. So its a bit annoying to find you dont get to play as the snake as the tarantula and scorpion are fairly similar. However do not let this put you off and give this great wii game a go.
This game is a mixture of action and adventure. You play 2 characters a scorpion and a tarantula. On your way to fight the ultimate threat (Human), you end up stumbling across many enemies and they get harder to bet. Graphic are cool but could be better. Story is told in a interesting and great way. The save speed is unbelievable it takes like 5-6 secs NO JOKE!!!!!! The only let down is sometimes it freezes for about 4 secs to load the surroundings. This game is well worth €16.99.
