dont go for the month to month thingy cos its annoying to cancel, this method is easier and cheeper and theres less commitment!
Xbox 360 wouldnt be a next gen console without live. You hav to play on live to get the most out of your xbox. However let me suggest that you get the 12 month membership because it is cheaper overall.
I have had an xBox 360 scince the release date. When i got my second xbox (not due to a hardware faliure, i needed one at both houses) i decided to get live. I had gone without live for the last three years. Now i cant live without it. It takes the 360 to a completely different level. its truely INSANE!!!!

You can play people around the world which you can't do with just the free standard silver membership. One of the arguments for a PS3 is that their online service is free of charge but it is no where near to the standard of Xbox live, Microsoft have made it easy and streamlined to getting together with your friends to get the real enjoyment out of games!
