Vault 101 - Jewel of the Wastes. For 200 years, Vault 101 has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you've ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth.

V.A.T.S. allows you to pause time in combat, target specific body parts on your target, queue up attacks, and let Vault-Tec take out your aggression for you. Rain death and destruction in an all-new cinematic presentation.

Mind-Blowing Artificial Intelligence: At Vault-Tec, we realise that the key to reviving civilisation after a global nuclear war is people. Our best minds pooled their efforts to produce an advanced version of Radiant A.I., America's First Choice in Human Interaction Simulation. Facial expressions, gestures, unique dialog, and lifelike behavior are brought together with stunning results by the latest in Vault-Tec technology.

Eye-Popping Prettiness: Witness the harsh realities of nuclear fallout rendered like never before in modern super-deluxe HD graphics. From the barren Wasteland, to the danger-filled offices and metro tunnels of DC, to the hideous rotten flesh of a mutant's face.

Fallout 3 Game of the Year??

            | | See all Themer's reviews (3)

            This game is truly brilliant.
I was apprehensive at first with the whole game being different from its predecessors but its done them truly proud.
Graphically it is superb and looks realistic.
Gameplay is vastly improved from the original with the Turn-Base realtime like combat system giving the game a great basis.
The story is very good at least to the point I'm at currently and does really make you wonder about what is happening.
            Overall Briliant, A must buy

I brought this on an impulse not knowing much about it except it being a rpg. I've got to say i love it! The story line is so believable and amazing i'm right stuck in to it. I'm a real lover of story driven games and this one is right up there with others like mass effect.

Engage in a game of scavenging everything you find from mini nuke guns to broken tin cans. Travel far and wide in a map modelled on washington dc. Yes the developers produced a simple map of dc then basically just destroyed it. Encounter all types of mutants and beasts along your journey. As you will have probably seen in other videos there is a bullet time system, this is called vats. I thought this look pretty lame in a video i've seen but i'll have you know its awesome. You can cripple a mutants leg so it slows him down when he's running at you. One for the list of jumpy games like sections of half life2 (ravenholm) or fear.

This is a game with an easily 100+hours game time.

Great game! Useful tip, get to know your compass.

Fallout 3 is a very complicated game that is for patient gamers, it has brilliant graphics and fantastic detail environments.

I WARN YOU THOUGH: READ the instructions on how to understand your compass, it's highly important as they don't tell you how to use it. Because I came out of the vault 101 and suddenly felt very lost, and didn't have a clue on where to go (But I have to say coming out of the vault after an hour gameplay in Vault 101, seeing the sunlight shine down on you, once you have escaped to the outside world, is truly brilliant, they have captured that feeling of freedom superbly). I went into a building and tried to take on the enemy with little weapons. So I got very frustrated and thought this game was waay too hard, but I was wrong I had to go to the first quest which is located and marked on your Pip-Boy and the compass will guide you there. So you should go to the very first town where the sheriff is, it's a small civilization of people, where you can buy equipment and items that are essential to your quest. When I got here after 6 hours gameplay, coz I finally was bothered to read the instructions on the game for the first time in my life had to read instructions on a game, it gave the game more structure and from there I started to understand it.

You may find this game quite difficult at first, as there is a lack of know how when you start the game, it's all about working it out for yourself. Once you understand what you are doing then your on your way to enjoying the game. Even when I was not knowing what I was doing, for some reason I still couldn't put the game down, it's very addictive.

It's a great game but I think 4 stars is a fair rating because the animation on the 3rd person view of your created character is a little ps2 like, its not terrible and doesn't spoil the game but it could have been a little better in the 3rd person view. Being able to choose from First person shooter to 3rd person shooter is very important in this game because I don't think it works well as a First Person Shooter, it's much better as a 3rd Person.

To describe the gameplay it's like Resident Evil but a much better version of Resident Evil. Now I don't like Resident Evil, so it's not quite the same as Fallout 3, but on a similar ground.

Overall a great game, and a must have but please do read the instructions before playing this game.

            - Thank you for reading my review

A huge game, ambitious and filled with interest. The setting is incredibly evocative and very well created. Visually its rather stunning, occasionally a little generic, but overall the feel of the wasteland is conveyed well with some wonderful lighting and a lot of attention gone into the rubble. Exploring is always worth while, theres all manner of things to be found and the landscape is littered with interesting features, ruined towns, corpses, beasties. Theres a definate thrill to be had just roaming around as you never know what shattered wonders you may find over the next hill. Theres a fantastic sense of place which rarely falters. Its also huge - if you're prepared to lose yourself in it, you can play for hours and barely explore much of area outside the vault.

Naturally theres some elements left over from Oblivion here, which is no terribly bad thing, but it will feel familiar in many locations. Often you can draw comparisons to Morrowind too and as with both those games combat can be a little clunky with logic suspended to allow for your skills to rule the outcome, ie 3 headshots don't kill, its the bullet in the leg that finally takes out the super mutant. Odd, and often counter intutive, but you'll get used to it. The VATS system works well enough and is often essential when faced with multiple enemies.

Side quests are scattered throughout and are often more involved than simple 'go here, do that' with many expanding again as you progress through them.

Awesome stuff generally, the only things that spoil it are the somewhat dodgy animation and voiceovers and the slightly clunky combat. But let the environment suck you in and theres hours of wonderful stuff to discover here.

Fallout 3 is one of those games that really drew me in from the very start of the game. You begin growing up in Vault 101, a safe haven from the nuclear fallout, and supposedly no-one has ever been in or out of Vault 101 since the fallout.
The game's start is very much just a tutorial and you getting a feel for the character and people around you.
Basically your father manages to leave the Vault, he doesnt tell you why, so now your mission is to find your father (insert darth vader jokes here)
The character customisation is fairly basic, apart from the hair styles and beard types which are alright, most faces will end up looking the same, but again, you wont really see your face in most of the game even if you use third person view so it wont spoil it either way. You start to forget about the way your character looks as soon as your being chased by super mutants with missile launchers, so dont worry.

You can also change your beard and hair when you get a place of your own in Megaton which is the first city you should come across when you leave the Vault.
The first thing you notice when you walk out of Vault 101 is the graphics. The utter destruction that lays waste infront of you is astounding. The attention to detail really makes you feel as if your alone in the world, and you have to get your hands on anything you can just to survive.
The free-roam aspect is still there, but there are times when you will have to travel underground in the metro lines to get to certain area's. So it can be restricted although you can teleport to an area if you've already been there apart from when your underground or encumbered. They make you go in the underground for a reason though. To crap your pants.

When I first encountered the ghouls I nearly kegged me pants. The enemies details are amazing. It seemed so real. Thats what Fallout 3 does so well, it makes the world and everywhere you go seem so real.
If you laughed at the thought of a giant super mutant walking the earth, this game will make you believe that its real, it really is quite gripping when faced against enemies.
The VATS system works quite well, at times when your low on ammo or health its obviously brilliant as your more likely to hit the enemy in VATS. Sometimes some enemies are just easier to kill the good old fashioned way, shotgun to the face in realtime, whereas the VATS has its appeal if you tend to panic when super mutants are charging you with nail boards.

The one interesting thing this game does, it makes you scavange everything. If you find a tin can on the floor, you'll want to sell it to make money which the currency is bottle caps. Its very hard to make money, and you cant carry an awful lot very early on, so you find yourself just porting to and fro from one area back to a town to sell your items which doesnt get boring.

I cant comment how it compares to the other Fallout games as I have never played them but this game is truly a winner.
If your getting this game because of loving Oblivion then you'll find this game different in alot of area's. Firstly the scenery, then weapons, combat and alot of other things are different, but in a good way. Fallout gives us a different experience. Its like the film Mad Max turned into a game only better.
The weapons are great too. It takes about roughly 1 / 2 hours to get used to Fallouts system and by that point you wont be able to put it down.
Fallout keeps all the good parts of Oblivion, and now in a different perspective, and it works so well.

If you want a game to last through the xmas holidays, this one is for you. Its scary as hell, yet bloody great fun.
A must buy for anyone. Definatly a contender for game of the year.
