I have owned this game since 2009 and still find myself coming back for more zombie slaughtering fun. Left 4 Dead 2 is the next instalment in the Left 4 Dead series made by Valve on the source engine. Its about four of the unluckiest people in the world struggling through varied environments, getting rescued at the end of each one but it never quite seems to catch. The game itself hasn't really changed at all since the first one, the biggest change being melee weapons which consist of guitars, crowbars, night sticks, axes, katana, baseball bats, cricket bats, machetes, the chainsaw (obviously) and golf clubs(In the DLC). Though this game is practically the same as the first one, it feels more like an expansion pack to the original rather than an actual release. The gameplay is the same and the story is pretty much the same every time. Get to evacuation, call for evacuation, massive hordes of enemies as you wait for evacuation, get saved.
There are five different campaigns to play which sounds like it would get boring but they get mixed up a bit by the AI director who changes where weapons will spawn, when hordes of enemies will attack and even level layout, it can block certain paths and creates new ones. This does make the game a bit more fun to play because anything could happen.
The multiplayer on Left 4 Dead 2 is exactly the same as on the first one where one team of four people are the survivors and another team of four people play as the special infected who have to stop them getting through the campaign missions. They have created some more multiplayer game types like scavenge, realism and survival makes another appearance from the first game.
Realism is just a campaign mode where the survivors take twice as much damage, can no longer see each other through walls and there is no outlines around weapons and other items, which adds another challenge to the game and encourages team work which is vital in Left 4 Dead.
There isn't just ordinary infected like most zombie games, Left 4 Dead has chucked in some different zombies these are called the special infected. The special infected consist of: Smokers, Hunters, Boomers, Spitters, Chargers, Jockeys, Witches and Tanks. Most of these require you to work as a team to beat. For example If one survivor has been pinned by a Hunter then one of the other survivors has to knock the Hunter off, so teamwork is essential.
The games friendly AI can be a bit stupid at times. They will occasionally just stand there and watch you getting murdered whilst they finish their cup of tea, which can be infuriating.
What the game lacks for me is the dark atmosphere that was in the first one, you are only in the dark in one campaign unlike the first one where you're always in the dark. This does take some of the atmosphere away from a zombie based game. Also for a game in the horror section of most websites it isn't that scary, the scariest part of the game is when you are looking around and something will just appear round the corner.
I'm giving this game a four star rating. Although it is very fun, it can get incredibly repetitive once you do the campaigns a couple of times.
The online multiplayer is entertaining especially when you are the zombies. I recommend having a couple of friends who will play this with you because on your own you have to play with the AI who can lack in assistance on quite a few occasions.
