  An Excellent Reboot

Series reboots seem to be all the rage at present but Tomb Raider can certainly be held as an example of how to do it right. Series purists will argue that there is a little too much focus on combat at the expense of platforming but, for me at least, Lara Croft's first adventure struck mostly the right balance providing thoroughly enjoyable gameplay throughout is ten hour running time.

A promising start and I'll certainly be looking out for the sequel.

Despite this game being set before all the others at the start of the game lara seems to be using an iphone :S rather strange but other than the issue with the year the game is set in its infact a brilliant game with alot to do and the environment is superb.

Would definatly recommend this to everyone. who can resist running around the woods with a bow and arrows?

5* quality

I was skeptical about this game as reboots can often be terrible. I was wrong. This game is amazing. I'd go as far to say that it's one of the best games I have ever played. The graphics are breath taking and the gameplay flows really well, so much so that I didn't get bored and could hardly put it down. This is exactly what tomb raider needed - to evolve. A vigorous retake full of grit and an interesting plot. The fighting style is completely different too, with different weapons and upgrades to choose from, and gory melee attacks and finishing moves. Exploration within a sandbox style map seems endless, with puzzles and secret tombs galore. This is one of the top games of the year, nay ever. Buy it.

Not as good as I was hoping for

I'm quite surprised by the reviews on here - they all speak very highly of the new TombRaider game...
It was TombRaider 2 way back on the PS2 that really got me into console games...many a happy night was spent slaving away into the early hours to get to the next level...sometimes just to get through one particularly trick area!
I've bought every game since and found them all pretty good, if all a bit "more of the same" but that wasn't actually a bad thing.
But this new game is a completely different animal.
Yes it has excellent graphics and the combat is far better than the previous versions...but where is the exploration? Where are the devilishly difficult puzzles? Where are the hours spent looking for that extra switch or that extra artifact to get you through a door into the next level? This new game seems far too linear for my liking - almost just like a bog-standard FPS.
I've only played about the first 10% of the game so far, so it could be early days...but it also feels like it's more of an "interactive movie" than a game? Like it's all fully planned out what is going to happen and i'm just pushing the odd button here and there...and cut-scenes where you have to press the indicated button when told to drive me mad...
So all in all I'm a bit disappointed so far but, as I said, it's still early in the game...

  Superb

Brilliant game from start to finish. A completely new feel to the Tomb Raider series.

Played it through three times, and that is unheard of for me.

When I knew this was going to be released I was so excited as I am a big fan of the Tomb Raider games but I must say I cant help but feel a little disappointed. Lets start with the positives - the graphics have improved greatly and it looks amazing. The story is great too and really fills in some blanks on how it all started. But now the negatives - the whole time I was playing this my mind kept saying this is not Tomb Raider now I understand it is supposed to be set before Lara got all kick ass and started hunting treasure however there where some elements that I missed greatly from this game. One thing that bothered me is the puzzle solving aspect of the game - traditionally Tomb Raider games are full of puzzles and logic solving - this hardly has any (but there are some - that are incredibly easy) this makes it a lot like every other game you can buy.

The fact there is less logic involved in this game gives way to a lot of repetitive crawl through a cave - shot loads of bad guys - run through the forest - shoot loads of bad guys - crawl through a cave - shoot loads of bad guys etc etc which I quickly found to get very tedious. Also Im nearly 80% of the way through the game and I am still on the same island! Yes I am aware that its set before she started all this travelling but I would of liked a bit of variety. I cant help but feel it is like every other shooter game around.

In all a good game...if I had never played previous Tomb Raiders. Dont get me wrong I appreciate the good graphics and the ease of game play - along with some new Lara style moves. However I just cant shake the feeling of disappointment as once again while writing this I cant help thinking......this isnt Tomb Raider.

Without a doubt THE best Tomb Raider game I've played to date. This game just keeps giving - it keeps you totally engrossed right to the end credits. Graphics are gorgeous, gameplay is perfect - just the right balance between combat and exploration - I can't fault it anywhere. An essential purchase - buy it now.
