Not everyone will survive. An ancient alien race, known only as "Reapers", has launched an all-out invasion leaving nothing but a trail of destruction in their wake. Earth has been taken, the galaxy is on the verge of total annihilation, and you are the only one who can stop them. The price of failure is extinction.

You are Commander Shepard, a character that you can forge in your own image. You determine how events will play out, which planets to explore, and whom to form alliances with as you rally a force to eliminate the Reaper threat once and for all. How you wage this war is completely up to you: go into combat with guns blazing or use cover to plan a more tactical assault. Utilize your squad to full effect or take a lone wolf approach. Rain death from a distance or go toe-to-toe with enemies using devastating melee attacks. Mass Effect 3 will react to each decision you make as you play through a truly unique experience of your own creation.

  • A rich, branching storyline: Experience a sci-fi epic with multiple endings determined by your choices and actions throughout the game
  • Massive in scope: Battle on many worlds across the galaxy as you unite the ultimate force to take back the Earth before it's too late
  • Large-scale and intelligent enemies: Battle enormous enemies and take on a smarter type of foe that will consistently challenge your best combat tactics and put you on the edge of your seat
  • Unlock a customizable arsenal: Tailor each weapon with devastating upgrades including scopes, grips, barrels and dozens of other unique attachments. Each weapon boasts its own powerful impact and visual flair.
  • Unleash death from afar or go toe-to-toe: Customize your soldier and squad to engage the enemy on your terms. A huge variety of weapons, abilities and equipment allow you to combat the enemy in your preferred style of play.

 It all comes crashing down...

As a longtime fan of the Mass Effect series it is painful for me to give this game such a low rating. The fact is that while the majority of the game is very good, though not without its shortcomings, the finale of Mass Effect 3 is atrocious; riddled with plot-holes and contradictions, vague, unsatisfying, non-sensical, and ultimately left me feeling bitter and empty.

The most obvious strength of ME3, like previous installments, is its characters. The voice actors bring them to life masterfully (if of course you ignore the shameless inclusion of a certain IGN personality), and they are rounded and interesting enough to make you genuinely care about them. The story is fairly simple, but easy to follow, and grand in its scope; after discovering the plans for an ultimate weapon, you must rally the races of the galaxy, resolve long-standing grudges, and bring them together to combat the Reapers while this weapon is constructed. There are some exciting, cinematic moments, and it is very satisfying to see events and characters from the previous games melded into the narrative, even if some of these are only token, or cameo, appearances. The combat is very similar to ME2, with various tweaks that improve the system. It's much more challenging this time around, and I found myself constantly experimenting with my load-outs right up until the final moments.

The quest system is very poorly implemented. Many scanning side quests will be heaped on you just by overhearing conversations as you walk through the Citadel, and there is no way to track your progress. With the lack of any real context, it makes the side quests rather tedious. There are also very few characters available as squadmates, when compared to the previous games. Two of which are only available about half way through the game, and another only if you buy the From Ashes DLC. Generally, I couldn't help but feel that many elements of this game were clumsily put together, but it all seems to work nonetheless.

These gripes, however, are irrelevant when held against the ending. What truly makes it such a travesty, aside from all the ridiculous lapses in logic that the ending is rife with, (and all the lies it now seems we were told by Bioware prior to release), is that it totally overshadows and negates the many positive aspects of the series that have come before it. All the characters you've come to care about, all the relationships you've built, all the hard choices and sacrifices you've had to make, and all the problems you've solved, ultimately all mean nothing. This is the reason for such a low-scored review, and the reason why so many others are doing likewise; the aspects that made Mass Effect great are all scrapped and tarnished in the final hour in favour of a pseudo-philosophical, nihilistic, non-sensical conclusion. Bioware even have the audacity to leave you a little message after the credits role telling you to buy more DLC. Disgusting.

The 30 hours of enjoyment you'll get from most of the game are not enough to justify the final emptiness it will leave you with. It is simply not worth it.

 FANTASTIC!

I've been waiting two years for the next MASS EFFECT! It has been SO WORTH the wait!

It really is unlike any other game out there! STRONGLY Recommend playing the first two though! You can buy them dirt cheap nowadays! Do it!

 Good until the ending.....

From the start this game was fantastic....

The game play has been improved and it feels a lot smoother with the addition of the new 'hold down B' melee which is a great new edition.

The graphics are also fantastic, i was most impressed with the graphics of the many different planets you can fly around in the Normandy and i was impressed with the graphics on the citadel as well. Furthermore, BioWare designed The Citadel very impressively, there are many different floors on it where there are different types of buildings on each, there are Bars, Hospitals and Embassies to explore with plenty of missions.

I have no quarrels with the companions, they all bring there own banter. There is a couple of new companions but most are ones from the previous games e.g Garrus who is my personal favorite, Liara- the sexy one, in a weird alien blue way- and Kaidan and Ashley. The only problem i have with the companions is the first day DLC in which BioWare made 800 MSP, and i thought the plot was too important to not put in the actual game which i thought was a bad move, the companion you get with this DLC is very good though.

The missions were all gripping and had excellent twists so i had no problem with those.

I loved the choices throughout the game, with the paragon and renegade options which i believed would impact the end of the game, this is why i made my choices carefully and i was looking forward to the outcomes.

I was bitterly disappointed with the ending.... all these choices i carefully chose and thought about had no impact at all. It had no impact which species you sided with or what your battle readiness was or how many fleets you had. You still ended up with the sam 3 endings to choose from, all of which were dreadful.... The 2 games before this were leading up to the very moment and it just wasn't good enough..... I just didn't care what happened to my Shephard or what happened to the Reapers or Earth because it just didn't make sense and the ending just flew over my head. I put 40 hours into this, explored every room and planet possible and this all counted for nothing in the final battle. It also, doesn't tell you what happens to your companions or Shepard after the battle. You just see them getting out of the downed Normandy and then it finishes.

I thought the ending to Mass Effect 2 was fabulous and i completed it 3 times, each time with a different outcome, i don't think i will complete ME3 again because i just don't care about the other endings because im just not bothered.
Very annoyed with BioWare with this unfinished and rushed ending to the greatest gaming trilogy of all time.....

Very dramatic, tense and pretty high production values throughout, and very slick in its gameplay mechanisms. But the story kinda takes a back seat (minimal intro from ME2 to ME3, and no references to the ending of that game) although there are many good missions. A highly enjoyable game, and then there is the ending...
The ending is a classic case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, it is genuinely and objectively bad. The last 15 minutes reveal new characters, do several 180-degree plot spins changing the context of major story elements, and could easily be characterised as deus ex machina. It is badly conceived, generates plot holes large enough to fly a spaceship through, is inconsistent with the setting and narrative, is unremittingly grim and provides no closure to the story. Sadly it actually succeeds in tarnishing both the product and the legacy of the franchise at what should have been the moment of closing triumph of a great trilogy.
Overall, if you're not a fan of the series, there is a slick shooter here which you may enjoy. If on the other hand you are a real Mass Effect fan you may be better off not playing the final mission and making up your own ending, or reading one of the many fan-written ones.

 Awesome game BUT....

I am a die hard fan of the Mass Effect series and have played both of the prequels several times in order to achieve all that I could when ME3 finally arrived...and it did...and what a poor ending. Bioware spent all this time and energy designing these games so that you have choices and everything you do has a consequence. Also spending time making you care about your character and your squadmates so that you get so involved more so than any other game i have played...then finally you get to the end of ME3 with approximately 100-120 hours of play time under your belt (more if youve replayed to improve your character) and it all comes down to three choices which to be honest are all pretty crap with one possibly leaving Shepard alive but stranded (as ships dont work anymore). Talk about a MAJOR let down and very disappointing. I would like to think that Bioware might do the decent thing and releases a DLC that alters the ending so that whether you are paragon or renegade or a bit of both, everything you do affects what happens and you can get follow up on those characters you care about. I believe they are planning on continuing to use the Mass Effect universe but this is the end for Shepard...anti-climax understatement!
