On the plus side it looks pretty decent. Now on with the negatives.....

Having 5 years in development you would at least think they could create a memorable game. It's repetitive, lacks any type of real scares, has laughable facial animation, constantly unfair AI (I must have been axed in the back 20 times now with no effort on the games part to draw attention to the enemy), a camera that REFUSES to stay where I repeatedly asked it to be and worst of all a central character who you feel absolutely nothing for. Alan Wake is the most mundane and down right boring 'hero' I think I've had had the mis-fortune to play. The narration running through the entire game stinks as well.

Another middle of the road 360 title advertised as AAA by Microsoft. Don't believe the hype.

If your sick of pretty much only being able to play some sort of modern day war shooter on your Xbox 360 like me and are a fan of truly stunning games, then get Alan Wake. It is the greatest game i have played on the 360, the story is award winning not just for a game but just on how original and compelling it is. I honestly couldn't put this game down , it's sad when today's market is full of copy cat shooters that get all the praise, when it's games like Alan Wake that should be leading the pack. I urge you to buy this if you even remotely enjoy playing video games.

 Underrated - awesome game - great story

This plays like a cross between an adventure game and a shooter, with the focus on the moody, atmospheric story. It's like a Stephen King movie in the shape of a game, so there are plenty of tense moments and sharp shocks as enemies suddenly reveal themselves nearby. There are not many story choices - unlike say Mass Effect 2, where you can shape the story a little- but the voice acting is great and it's a wonderful frame for the action. I loved the premonition elements as you find pages of the novel which tell you a bit more about what's going to happen.

The game elements are nicely judged, the mechanic of "light = safe, dark = bad" fits the story well, and the auto-save works nicely, you don't often get put back more than a few minutes if you die.

Excellent game, well worth playing and a bit different as an experience compared to Halo / MW2 / etc.

Along with many Remedy fans out there, it seems I was waiting forever for Alan Wake to be released, and I couldn't be more disappointed. If someone told me that this game took 1,5 years for them to make, I would definitely believe them.

The good: Not the best but pretty good environment graphics (not the character models though) and that's it.

The Bad:
- One of the most repetitive games I've played this generation. There are essentially 3 enemy types in the whole game (actually there are 5 but the other 2 appear 3 times in the whole game). There is one small one with an knife that takes 2 revolver or 1 shotgun shot to kill, one big one with an axe that takes 4 revolver or 2 shotgun shots to kill, and a chainsaw one that takes 6 revolver or 3 shotgun shots to kill. That's it. No bosses, some tables and stuff that fly around and birds that look like they came out from a pg-13 horror movie. There are also 2 weapon types in the whole game. One revolver and a shotgun (actually 3 types of shotgun but they're essentially the same.

-Last generation level design. In 90% percent of the game you just walk through a forest path. In 90% of the game you just have to get somewhere but the path is "blocked" so you have to "find a way" to get there and you have to go around a whole mountain to do so. Many game use this level design but not in the same extent that Alan Wake does. In a 6 episode game, when you have to do this AT LEAST 3 times in each episode, it just seems that the developers had to make this pretty short game a little longer and they drag you through the same forest and path graphics all the time just to fill the time.

-Laughable character animation and lip sync. For a game that's been in production for 6 years the production values are just not there.

-Short, linear and no replay value. You can complete this game, with a lot of exploration in under 10 hours. It's extremely linear, there are no side mission, and you can't stray from the path that you have to take. No stuff to unlock and once you're done, there'a absolutely no reason to come back.

-Lacking story and emotion connection to the character. Alan Wake is not a likeable character. You'll establish no connection to him whatsoever. Also it has a LOT of plot holes and stuff that just don't add up. Also for a game that describes itself as a psychological thriller, it's pretty laughable. Imagine you're watching a horror movie. You get scared in the first 5 minutes, because there are some good scenes. Imagine now that you have to watch these scenes again and again for 2 more hours. If you watching the same thing again and again it stops being scary, it just gets boring.

If you still don't believe me do yourself a favour. With no replay value just rent it for the weekend. You''l have no problem finishing the game in 2 afternoons. If you still think than it's good, or that you'll want to play it again (no way) then buy it. My advice is to keep your hard earned money for something better.

Boring and repetitive. Really gave this game a chance but to be honest got so bored running through forests doing the same thing over and over and over....................................................for me it was too structured and not enough freedom. You basically do as you are told in this game which for me does not offer enough freedom or thought to keep you occupied for long.
how it works is like this...................you are told you need to reach somewhere so off you go surprise surprise you run through a dark forest get attacked by the taken ones, shine a torch on them, bang bang they are dead. Carry on a bit longer attacked again, bang bang, dead. And so on until you reach where you are shown how to get to. Then off you go again into the dark forest after being told you now have to reach something else. And once again same scenario.
For me it just didnt offer enough thought or freedom. Personally if you like this style of game go for it but for those of you who like a challenge, a bit of thought input and maybe something a bit challenging AVOID THIS GAME LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
