Dead Rising follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance photojournalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to a small suburban town only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. He escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. It will be a true struggle to survive the endless stream of enemies, but players will have full reign of a realistic shopping center, utilizing anything they find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic.
Dead Rising features an open level of freedom and offers a vast array of gameplay possibilities. As part of a real time system, time is dynamic in Dead Rising, marching on whether Frank is actively engaged or if he is stationary. Time also plays a role as zombies become more powerful when the sun goes down. Though they move slowly during the day, the zombies become stronger and faster at night, making it even more dangerous for players to survive. The unprecedented numbers of enemies come in never-ending waves and consist of a diverse population of former humans that have retained some memory of their previous lives, which is reflected in their behavior and appearance. The variety of different stores in the mall offers players an endless supply of resources including vehicles, makeshift weapons and more. Players will also encounter other survivors along the way and by helping them can acquire valuable clues as to what has happened.
  • Suitable for 18 years and over. Not for sale to persons under age 18. By purchasing this product, you declare that you are 18 years of age and over.
  • Huge environment - expansive indoor and outdoor areas of the mall provide a variety of different locations to explore
  • Swarm technology allows an unprecedented amount of enemies on screen at once resulting in nonstop, pulse-pounding action
  • Intense gore and vibrant realism
  • Grab environmental objects like umbrellas and benches to use as improvised weapons
  • Snatch items from different stores to use as weapons including golf clubs, lawnmowers, frying pans and more
  • Chow down on various "mall food" to revive health
  • Real time system - key events happen at certain times and if players are not mindful, important story elements and opportunities may be missed
  • Use Frank's photojournalistic skills to capture the insanity on film, the better the shot, the better the reward will be

 Always unique

Ah yes, this game was recommended to me by a friend, and I have bought him a beer already as a thank you for talking me into it. So, the review:
GRAPHICS: Quite simply, excellent. The detail in the mall is very good and the characters and zombies also look great. The cut scenes are also very good to watch. Deffinatly one of the better games for graphics.
STORY/PLAYABILITY: The heart of most games. The story is excellent and will keep you thinking for quite a while, though you may guess some of it. However, one thing that I sometimes get a little frustrated with, is that you're stuck to a set time scale. By which I mean you have to do each mission at a set time, and you have to complete the mission before the next one starts. So if you go off exploring and forget the time, you may need to start the game over again, just to continue the story. Deffinatly a game you can go back and play again and again for all the achievements, extras and different endings you can get (I think there are 5 endings in total).
COMBAT: Fighting is a big part in this, as is running. The brilliant thing with this game is that *anything* is a weapon. You can go to a sword shop and grab a katana, or go get a bowling ball, or maybe a plastic lightsaber? Or a lawnmower? Though each weapon has limited durability, it prompts you to constantly find new things (I even found a fish to slap zomies with) which makes the game quite fun and different. Your character also levels up and learns knew moves, which is useful as you also gain more life and speed, etc. These moves are usually for unarmed fighting, and again make the whole combat system much more than just button bashing. Excellent!
OVERALL: A game that is graphically sound, and exceeds expectations all round. I would recommend it to almost anyone. Although it isn't an online game, it has a lot of repeat playing life. A must have for 360 owners.

 Too many flaws to enjoy

Who doesn't want to play a game where there are thousands of zombies walking around, just waiting to be killed? The problem is, this isn't exactly what you get.

Unless you complete the game to unlock free roam mode, you are stuck with the very limited story mode. Missions are timed, therefore limiting freedom. Add to this an awful save system, which has 1 slot only, and save points which are out of the way, and you get a game that has a lot of potential, but has too many frustrations to make it appeal for long.

Also, unless you have an HDTV, you cannot read the text in the game to work out what the missions require. Not an issue for me, but I'm sure it is for many people.

 Not What Was Expected

Like many others I purchased this based on others reviews and was sorely disappointed it's just boring way too many zombies which means you die hundreds of times and then have to load from your last save and loose all your achievements after your last save it is very frustrating. Some enemies require shooting but the aiming dynamics truly suck so I would not bother with that just use melee weapons and just hope it does not break in the middle of a bloody battle or you guessed it, you die. What the game needed was an intuitive lock on ability so you could run while locked on and then tap left or right to lock on to the next target but you do not get that which is a shame. Not many games bore me to the piont where I do not want to play anymore but this is one, not a good buy Avoid.

Sweet if u ever wanted to try and live through a zombie nightmare this is great and the best thing is! U can be a coward or be a hero and i like to smash zombies with near enough anything in the mail so yes i love it

great game but with some flaws

over all one of the best games i have ever played and i own over 40 games for the 360 alone,
the gore, the characters are all great and the comic value is priceless

BUT no co-op was annoying and the story was dull and the shooting system was rubbish but oh well its rubbish in resident evil 5 aswell
people keep going on that they keep having to start at the beginning every time that they died but thats only because they choose the "save status and quit" option

the most anoying thing however was not the carlitto bomb mission or the annoying save system or even the yellow hooded cultists it was Otis who radioed you EVERY SECOND

overall the sheer brilliance of this game can overcome these now seemingly little flaws and is defiantly in my top 5 games of all time.
