I guess the film requires some familarity with the "real" story of the alien autopsy film. Not so much plotwise, but remembering the huge media storm about it makes the film a lot funnier.
Overall, it's not a undying classic, but a funny and enjoyable film.
It is hard to be objective about a film you've seen become reality. So I'm not going to even try.
However on the disc there is also a feature lenght "making of" documentary that chronicles the seven years(!) it took to make this film. It is in many ways a film on it's own, with a very honest look at how a group of youngsters managed to do a film like this - and how they grew up doing it.

While Donnie Darko is not everyones cup of tea, those who like it usually fall passionately in love with the movie. And there are quite a lot of us. The single thing that sets this movie apart is the number of levels it works on. And while it definetly doesn't offer easy answers for the viewer, it manages to satisfy.
As usual, the director's cut is not really an improvement over the original, it does have couple of interested scenes not seen in the theaterical version. However, for first time viewers I'd recommend the original cut.
