This is and I expect will remain the best novel I have ever read in my life...I am in love with each and every character, I cried on various occasions and am still thinking about the it weeks after having read the book...cannot praise it enough!

Considering the underlying plot of this novel - twins are born, one of whom has Down Syndrome and given away by her father, who suffers from guilt for the rest of his life - the grief of the child's mother who beleives the child to be dead - the sense of lonliness and confusion that plagues the child's sibling - the struggles of the woman who takes the child in - this book could and should have been absolutely explosive. In reality though, the book is slow and in places rather dull. The characters are disappointingly two-dinmensional, and hard to empathise with or feel an emotional connection to. Very hard to get in to and a struggle to complete.

I'm afraid that I have to repectfully disagree with the other 2 reviewers - this novel is fantastic from start to finish, with possibly the most intriguing ending to a novel that I have ever read. The ending is demonstrative of Martel's extraordinary (and admittedly sometimes odd!) imagination and style - anyone who has read Self will most certainly agree. I would recommend that anyone try this book.
The Kite Runner
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Perfectly written - you will become so emotionally involved with the charcters and their lives that they will stay with you long after you have read the book......
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Book 7 (Children's Edition)

All round a brilliant book - full of action from start to finish. The only bone I have to pick with it was that the ending was really a bit of a let-down - I expected something a bit more out of this world but predictable it was. Don't let it put you off though! Well worth a read.
