Confessions of a Conjuror
Derren takes you on an insightful journey into his thought processes and feelings in this sweet, refreshing variation of an autobiography. The reader is soon absorbed into the personal anxieties and amusing anecdotes that run through this book, ranging from his choice of toilet literature to how to poach the perfect egg, all of whilst centred around performing card tricks to restaurant clientele.
At times this book is funny, for instance when the author reminisces about time spent with his elderly friend Dorothy or strange childhood quirks, whilst also being affectionate when talking about the tenderness of falling in love. I personally found the agitation that Derren describes in losing things or having little patience at times as hilarious, as it is so true of me, and many others I'm sure, so it very much struck a chord but was so eloquently described and put into much better words than I ever could.
A definite must read for any Derren fan, it is a privilege to be given the chance to briefly enter the frenzy that goes on in his head, though I doubt many people will ever fully understand the man that is Derren Brown, and nor should they! An excellent book that you wwill not be able to put down and will leave wanting more!
Tricks of the Mind
I can honesty say this is one of the best books I have ever read. Entertaining, incredibly funny, honest and warm, there is something for everyone. Mr. Brown teaches mind tricks which can allow you to remember large amounts of data, I will never be able to forget certain word lists both backwards and forwards and vivid imagery during one mind trick (telephone, sausage, monkey, button, oh it will make sense once you read this book!) and I was weeping with laughter during some parts, such as the trouser incident!
There is a strong religious undertone to a large amount of the book, though it provides challenging and thoughtful suggestions which will make cause the reader to question and think a lot, which I personally found fascinating, though may not appeal to others.
Hypnosis was discussed in depth, ranging from the history of hypnosis to how Derren taught himself. I also enjoyed the autobiographical stories which occurred throughout the book, it shows Derren is a true gentleman, intelligent and very witty. It takes a special skill to bring the charisma, skill and a showmanship that Derren clearly has from stage to paper but this was executed brilliantly. I recommend this book to everyone!
Derren Brown: The Specials
24 New from
I was so happy when this DVD was released - a whole box set dedicated to the specials Derren Brown has created.
The Heist is an amazing show looking at how people can be manipulated into doing something they would not normally dream of doing. It was very cleverly put together and as well as having really amusing bits throughout and the ending was incredible!
The System shows one person how the power of belief can lead to them taking huge risks and gambles that they simply cannot afford. The betting system Derren has created is explained and the ending is jaw droppingly amazing!
The Seance investigates beliefs in the paranormal and afterlife. Scary at times and sometimes even uncomfortable to watch it is understandable as to why this show was so complained about. However I think Derren makes some very valid and well considered notions and this outweighs the any complaints made. In a chilling twist at the end Derren makes a very powerful point which makes you think long after watching the show. A truly excellent show that I recommend very much - though maybe try not to watch alone!
Russian Roulette was one of his most talked about shows which involved him putting a loaded gun to his head. Using his clever skills he attempts to work out which chamber the bullet is in with the help of someone he had only just met. Fantastic show!
All in all an AMAZING box set which you can watch over and over again though it was a shame that Messiah was not included!
The Truth About Melody Browne

I've never really read much by Lisa Jewell but I saw this and thought I'd give it a go and I'm really glad I did!
It's a lovely story about a girl called Melody who cannot remember her childhood. As the story develops and Melody begins to regain her memory and learn new things about herself, some shocking some sad and others just so heartwarming.
It's a real tear jerkers about love, life and more importantly family you choose for yourself.
Derren Brown: Enigma Live

'Enigma' - is my personal favourite Derren Brown live show, which is jam packed with fantastic material ranging from the jaw dropping tricks such as the sleepwalking audience member to the emotional 'medallion' trick. The ending is fantastic and involves a catchy song that stays in your head for a long time!
Derren Brown: Something Wicked This Way Comes

'Something Wicked This Way Comes' - features many amazing tricks including the 'don't want to watch but can't stop looking' nail trick, a disgustingly brilliant broken glass trick and participant involvement at every step of the way. Then there is the 'newspaper' trick which finishes the show on an fantastic high and the fact that Derren explains how he does it, is totally incredible!
Derren Brown: An Evening Of Wonders

'An Evening of Wonders' - is a fantastic journey looking at 'mind reading', lie detecting, featuring a gorilla (!), a truly excellent telephone trick and Derren's wonderful 'Oracle' act. The finale is outstanding and so very difficult to work out.

I can't say enough about this box set, it is truly amazing! I got it 2 nights ago and have watched all three DVD's as well as the extras already. It's a fantastic box set which every Derren fan should have, and even those who aren't his fans will be amazed.

All these live shows are presented to perfection with the wit, intelligence, skill and charm of the gentleman that is Derren Brown, who is honest in his dishonesty and does not claim to be psychic, he is very very clever - I cannot recommend this box set enough. Buy for everyone you know and treat yourself!

I have a few books by Judy Astley and was looking forward to enjoying them, unfortunately I was let down.
I found the plot basic, the pace too slow, the characters one dimensional leading for the reader to not care about them and the ending felt incomplete and a real real let down. At times throughout this book, she has a crude, distasteful style of writing which I didn't really like.
Although it was a thin book, I found it was a real chore to finish.
Really disappointing, though I've heard such good things about Judy Astley I will probabvly give another of her books a go in the future, so see if she can win me round. All in all, a big let down - Sorry.
A Thousand Splendid Suns

I read this book in a day - couldn't put it down. It tells a sad, yet realistic story during the war in Afghanistan, which is terrifyingly sad in some places and really sweet in others. It's a good read which shows true friendship, true love and most of all never giving in.
