  1.  Impressive

OK, I've only seen the 3D IMAX version (jaw-dropping experience), but there's enough character and story here to sink your teeth into. Of course, if you're only going to watch it for the action and effects, you'll be bored by everything in between. However, it *is* based on an old story, and director Zemeckis really does want to immerse you in a tragic myth. If that doesn't sound like your thing, avoid Beowulf. If it does, treat yourself to an exciting, visually stunning film.

  2.  Robot extravaganza

A boy and his first car (a Transformer named Bumblebee) team up with the awesome Optimus Prime to save the world from evil Megatron and his Decepticons.

Laughs, romance, HUUUUGE action scenes and some of the best special effects I've ever seen. It isn't perfect, but it doesn't need to be. Teenage boys of all ages will never forget it. The most satisfying blockbuster of the summer.

  3.  Swank shines

The story is nothing new (think Dangerous Minds or To Sir, With Love), but this is an excellent film nonetheless. It's based on real characters. All the students give good performances, whereas Hilary Swank is absolutely inspired, and inspirational, as an unorthodox teacher.

One of the best of its kind. Don't miss.

  4.  An excellent threequel

OK, it's not perfect, but this third Spider-Man is still WAY above average for a comic book movie. The birth of the Sandman is one of the highlights of the series, and the fight scenes couldn't be bettered.

Peter and Mary Jane's rocky relationship is getting a little tired; new girl Gwen Stacy (a gorgeous Bryce Dallas Howard) is under-used, and bad guy Venom feels kinda rushed. But otherwise you can't go far wrong with this blockbuster.

Thomas Haden Church makes a perfect Flint Marko/Sandman - he just looks the part. Topher Grace is good as the obnoxious photographer Eddie Brock. And the main trio are great as ever: Maguire, Dunst and Franco give it their all.

Don't listen to the nit-pickers on this one. It's a classy production all the way.
