  1.  What a blast

    Posted:

Although the game has gone back to 2D for the psp, one thing hasn't changed. Worms is still great. I've always liked this series, with worms armageddon on the PS1 being my favourite version. You team up your gang of 4 worms against from 1 to 3 more human or computer controlled teams with the objective of being the last team standing. This is done through multiple weapons and although the weapons available have been scaled down for the psp game, the fun ones are all here from the rocket launchers (manual and guided), grenades (normal and cluster bomb), shotgun, uzi, fire punch, air strike, to the real fun ones like banana bomb and sheep.

Multiplayer can either be done on the same psp or through the wifi mode which works very well (it's the first game I could try the wifi on and I was impressed with it).

So although this is scaled down a bit this is classic worms. Great stuff.

  2.  Back to the past and back to its best

This game is quality. Tomb raider legend was a brilliant game but was shorter than I expected. I've always loved the tomb raider series and hoped eidos would not mess this up, and they haven't. They've stayed true to the original and added some. The graphics are superb and the lighting is beautiful. The detail is fantastic and examples of this are the small flies in the sunlit areas, and Lara's top going darker when wet and leaving water footprints for a few seconds after emerging from water. The new rage system is brilliant. You fire at an enemy until it hits its rage meter, then when it charges the screen blurs and if you time your dodge roll correct a target will appear. Hit this at the right time for a one hit kill. The game has been re-done in places to include the new moves like Lara's grapple and the perchable columns. The game also tests your puzzle solving skills and all the puzzles are well designed and don't get boring. The areas you visit are beautiful too and include a coliseum arena, the sphinx, Egyptian gods, the lost world, a room with four doors including the Poseidon room which is a delight to play, and the final level before the end boss fight is full of lava where the heat haze and lava look so good. Each of these environments feel the part and also feel untouched when you visit them, you feel like you're the first person to see these areas. Lara moves fantastically well to from the running, climbing and swimming, each movement looks realistic.

Once the game is finished you can have a crack at a time trial on each level in which you can afford to make very few mistakes and provides a decent challenge. This adds more fun to the experience.

This is a quality game and has improved on a classic without ruining the experience of the original PS1 game. The only downside is that you no longer fight the 3 characters working for Natla, they have been replaced with interactive scenes, but this doesn't stop the game getting 5 stars. Brilliant.

  3.  The crash series is still going strong

I have to say that although crash has been overtaken as my PS2 favourite platformer by Ratchet & clank, and Jak & Daxter, the games involving crash are still an enjoyable experience. If you liked any of the PS1 and PS2 titles then this one won't disappoint as it's a new story. This time you have to team up with cortex which creates some unique double team moves like a ball to cross a marble madness/mercury style environment, or you can use cortex like a hammer to smash objects, throw him to another platform to help you on your way, or use him like a surfboard for the sliding stages. The difficulty level is like any other crash games which means to just complete the game won't take long but as usual its collecting gems that makes the game last longer as you have to find them, and then get to them. The bosses are well designed as usual but don't provide too much difficulty.

As a platinum game this is well worth the price.

  4.  These games just keep you hooked

I've got to admit I only tried final fantasy at number 7 to see what the fuss was about and I've been hooked since. And this version is another final fantasy game that just keeps you hooked. The characters are good, the graphics are great, there's a new grid system for you to choose the abilities the characters will learn which I thought was great, and the blitzball game is like speedball under water with a good tactical experience and you can trade players in it too.

    Another final fantasy gem.

  5.  More eye toy fun

    Posted:

This time the play series has turned purely to sport and it doesn't disappoint. This version supports up to 8 players. Once you start the objective is to win the main game by winning the sub-games. For example, if you're playing par for the course the game plays out on 18 holes. You don't play the golf itself, your shots you take are decided by mini-games. There are loads of mini-games in play sports (the cover says 101 but I'm not counting them). These range from swimming, running, ice hockey, weight lifting, hitting a shuttlecock (as its not played on a court I can't call it badminton), and I cannot remember the name of this game but involves you throwing a coloured ball at a jack in sand.

Some games require speed, some require timing, and some require the right touch, but all the games are fun to play. As ever, the eye toy becomes even more fun as multiplayer. This is well worth the money.

  7.  Its GTA junior

This is a well executed idea. Originally entitled bully with people trying to ban it, but why? If you play the game you can see the character actually beats on the bullies and tries to do what's right (of course, when your roaming freely you can do things bullyish like stuffing them in trash cans or lockers, or firing your weapons at people, but that's your choice). It's very similar in its make up as the GTA turf wars. Your sent to a school where there are several groups (nerds, jocks etc) you need to win over through various tasks. The missions are set up like in any GTA game and there are also lots of extras to do apart from your missions like a GTA game (for example collecting rubber bands). The school lessons are great. Some involve button presses, or my personnel favorite is the English lesson where you're given 6 letters and you have to try and find all the words possible from them. The weapons are what you'd expect to find in any cartoon playground like stink bombs, marbles.

Another rockstar classic, but I doubt they can do anything on the PS2 to match the mighty GTA San Andreas.

     Good but not much depth

At £10 I had to give this 4 stars as this makes it value for what you get. The game is split into 5 categories of test - Logic, memory, maths, language and concentration. The game has 2 single player modes. Practice asks you to pick one of the 5 categories and then one of the 3 sub-games in the category. Each has 3 difficulty levels. Test takes you through them all where your tested to a time limit. The difficulty changes after you answer a certain amount of questions and at the end you get an overall score.

Compared to the other psp game 'mind quiz' this game has a better presentation with a 3D environment and character. But the game depth, difficulty level, and options are way off that of 'mind quiz'.

If you like these games this is worth £10 as there are some really good tests in the game, but if you only want one then buy 'mind quiz' for the reasons mentioned above, but at this price i'd get both.

  9.  Change is good, very good

I loved the resident evil series on the PS1 but the efforts so far on the PS2 were not meeting my expectations. Code veronica was not impressive graphically and the outbreak files were too similar in movement to the PS1 versions.

So whats changed. Well theres no longer that awkward movement system. Leon moves fast and accurately now which makes fights, especially with boss characters, a lot more enjoyable as you have more freedom to move/dodge where you want too. And the new targting system is fantastic as the camera jumps right behind your shoulder and you get a targeting sight to aim at oncoming enemies. Also, the zombies have gone. They are now replaced by humans taken over by some form of parasite. They can run, they can throw weapons at you, they can climb. To put it simply they're much more intelligent than previous enemies in resident evil.

This game is faultless. The plot is good, the enemies are great, and there are a few unlockable sub-games to play once you beat the game. It will keep you coming back for more.

  10.  Like golf games, want a bit of fun, get this

    Posted:

Absolutely brilliant. This combines a reality of golf with great fun that just keeps you hooked. The reality side is that you have to take things like the wind, club selection, power of shot, level of rough/sand you may be in, and the run of the greens into consideration. The fun side comes with the characters and the presentation. You start with 2 characters but you unlock a load more through challenges. You can also unlock a variety of clubs which can work well for handicap multiplayer games. For example, if your playing someone who cannot get the timing right for the accuracy box then you they can play with the club which just allows you to set the power, but they will sacrifice a bit of distance for that, but this evens the score brilliantly if you want to make a game of it with someone not as good as you.

The single player game is huge with loads of 12 courses to play on (which can be mirrored which makes 24) in a normal style tournament, and challenge mode pits you against a new character each time until you unlock the lot. There's also 2 excellent mini golf games in here. Also there's a recording facility to save your best shots and watch them anytime you want too.

Simply, this game will make you love playing golf on the PS2.
