I have owned consoles since the days of the Sega Master System. Own X-box, PS1, PS2 Xbox 360 and now PS3.
I didnt regret my decision to sell my 360 (and everything but the wife and kids) to get the PS3. The machine is miles ahead compared to the 360 on just looks and build quality alone.
Once you start playing games you will be blown away. Admittedly there are not any real classic games available, but the system has just launched and there are some very good games available that suits most peoples tastes.
When you look at some of the games due to be released (GTA, MSG4 etc) the future looks great. When you consider that the console is new and developers are not pushing the hardware or using all of the system capabilities yet, the future looks extremely promising.
Games are looking as good (some better) than 360 titles and the 360 has been out for sometime and developers have got to grips with the system and are using all of the machines capabilities.
I have had no problems with the console at all, it handles everything perfectly. Film playback, is excellent. I ended up getting a HD TV and had absolutely no problems at all hooking it up via the HDMI socket, it was done automatically in minutes. (as was connecting surround sound speakers)
Online gameplay is very smooth (have played Call of Duty, Fight Night and Motorstorm), no problems with the connection etc.
Playstation network is fine, not quite as detailed as Xbox Live yet, but it has all you need, downloadable games, films (casino royale, more to come), demos, news etc.
Improvements are underway now the system is available worldwide but it already has all I need.
If you love games, films or both this machine is for you. Its a lot of cash to pay out but all consoles and PC's. Fact is that is is the cheapest Blueray player on the market and it is the most capable games console on the market all rolled up into one bundle
There are a lot of negative stories some true, some made up.
The controller (SIXAXIS) doesnt have a rumble feature (personally, I dont care) the controller also incorporates motion sensing. It is ok but not really a console selling attribute (not like the wii). It is not really incorporated significantly into any games that I have played yet.
My Mrs didnt agree with me getting the PS3 due to the price and said she would not have a need to touch it, but she is sat next to me playing on it as I type.
All I can say is if you can afford it, get one. If you cant afford it at the mo, save up. It really IS a fantastic console.
