  1.  Even better than the first series!

    Posted:

Although it is a lot darker than the first series (if that's even possible!) series 2 of Rome continues the story of Pullo and Vorenus through all the highs and lows that Rome throws at them.

Also, series 2 does look in more depth at some of the minor characters who were introduced in series 1:

    Timon - the Roman-Jew
    Posca - Slave of Caesar
Octavia - Daugher of Servilla of the Junii

And a few other surprises along the way. Bonus points to Pullo for "doing just what the lady ordered" in one of the episodes...

Series one MUST be watched before series two though, otherwise it just doesn't make any sense.

  2.  A romp through Rome

I cannot recommend this series enough. The program oozes Roman Culture and Roman life, and it is my current favourite TV series (and I don't expect that to change until I watch Spartacus on Blu-Ray soon).

There is a *lot* of blood, violence, sex and language though. Not one to show the kids, but a very convincing series based in Rome with enough politics to keep those uninterested in violence very interested indeed.

    Highly recommended!

  3.  Not a "run of the mill" MMO, but not in a bad way!

This game is not like other MMO's (World of Warcraft, LoTRO, Everquest). This is a sandbox and, thus, requires some serious research to get the most out of the game.

"Quests" are available in the form of missions from agents, but after the initial tutorials, you are thrown into the big-wide world with no other guidance on what to do.

Skills are trained based on time, rather than doing things in the game. For example, the "mining" skill will take around 5 and a half days to learn, regardless of if you spend 24 hours a day mining. This makes it difficult for new players to catch up with "veterans" who have spent a lot of years learning skills, but, and its been told over and over, a new pilot who has a well equipped ship who knows what he/she is doing can take down a veteran who has a badly equipped ship.

This game is the best example of an MMO. Its an absolutely horrible boring grind trying to solo the game. Once you find the role you want to play in the game (Combat Pilot, Miner, Industrialist) and join a corporation, the game starts to blossom from that point onwards.

Don't expect to reap rewards from the offset (the way that WoW gave you things from the start), and be prepared to sink a lot of time into the game.

This is not an easy game, so its not a game for everyone. But I enjoy it, so I can recommend it.

  4.  The Best Star Trek Film without Question

    Posted:

This is by far the best star trek film on offer. The reviewer above me went into detail about the extras so all i'll say is buy this and never look back!

Just ahead of "Undiscovered country" as my favourite star trek film.

  5.  The best series of friends...

This is by far the best series of friends out of all 10.
Just for the 4 episode storyline about Joey's new girlfriend, ending with "The one with Chandler in a box".

    Buying it today

  6.  I'm buying it for UT2004

I'll happily buy this game just got UT2004.

Still an ace FPS, and a great selection of vehicles.

    Worth buying!

  7.  Before moving onto later games, play this

Civilization 2 is the best game to get introduced to the Civilization series.

One of the best strategy games ever made. The gameplay is easy to learn but difficult to master.

    Play this!

  8.  Difficult game to learn

    Posted:

I've tried playing it numerous times and struggled around mid to late game, with other civs somehow getting more technology than me. I've never beaten this game once.

It is a very complicated game on many different levels, with religion being one of these levels. However, with enough dedication this game could be beaten, but i've found other games to satisfy my short-term needs at the moment. One day, i'll have another crack at it.

The deepest and best looking game of the Civilization series, but as a result the most complicated. Be wary.

  9.  Yes, its a warhammer game... but...

    Posted:

As a previous reviewer said - for your strategy needs, stick with Dawn of War.

This game is pretty poor. The idea of heroes leading units is good in theory, but the three different skill trees for a hero is just plain confusing, and during "hero-to-hero" combat you have to control your hero in order for him/her to be effective. This means the rest of your army is not being ordered around.

I did not have the patience to go through much of the storyline, and it was a nightmare finding out how to do a skirmish game.

    My recommendations:

Stick with "Dawn of War" or

If you're feeling inspired, go and take a look for "Warhammer: Dark Omen" for a good strategy game. You won't be disappointed with that game and its over 10 years old!

  10.  Difficult, but worth the effort

Made by the same people who did "Dawn of War", this is a move away from the sci-fi strategy towards a historical wargame instead.

An initial struggle through the campaign (because I am used to Dawn of War tactics) opened my eyes to more sneaky ideas, a greater use of cover as well as supporting vehicles during an assault.

The sound is chilling, and really adds to the atmosphere of warfare. The graphics are incredible for a real time strategy game, especially the physics (for example a tank going through a building or a unit of infantry being struck by artillery).

A very brutal representation of warfare, and this adds to the incredible success of Company of Heroes.
