Metallica were once brilliant, a shining example of the marriage between thrash and melody. Then they went and became a joke.
Death Magnetic is tired and fake. There is a sense that they're trying to recapture the glory days of the 1980s but in doing so it has become a pastiche. A group of 40 year olds without direction, trying to recapture their youth. This album isn't a resurgence or rebirth for Metallica but rather it shows the signs of a midlife crisis.
Excessive in length, confused in arrangement, and lacking in proper melody, the only thing that saves this record is the glimmer of energy that we all remember from the 1980s.
A shining example of growing old disgracefully. Metallica have become Spinal Tap.
