A hell of a story in its own right, and it's true!?
Reading Shantaram really did make me laugh and cry on regular occasions. I am usually stoically unemotional about these things, but Roberts' examples of love, generosity and compassion are very moving. Moreover, if it is true as it claims, I'm astounded at the life he has led. I also appreciated the fact that he avoided 'cashing in' on the sensational story of his previous life in Australia. You will want to see India and love it for its flaws.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough, the nearest comparison I can make for emotional excitement is The Grapes of Wrath.
