  1.  This is the right one to let in...

    Posted:

Let The Right One In is the best film I've seen in a long time.
It is the only film I can think of within the "Horror" genre that I can comfortably call beautiful. However, would I necessarily class this as a "Horror"? In all honesty, no I wouldn't.
Sure, it has all of the aspects a good horror requires, but there is much more depth to this film than many others of it's kind.
A beautiful love story intertwined with genuinely unsettling sequences bestow this film with a uniqueness I am yet to see from another production.

The story follows Oskar; a bullied 12 year old boy without a friend in the world. However, one day he meets the young and mysterious Eli, and soon enough a friendship develops between the two. A friendship that quickly blossoms into love. And when Oskar learns of Eli's connection to the gruesome events occurring in town he is torn between his head and his heart - to stay away from her and lose her or to protect the only person in the world he loves so dearly, and who loves him back.

The contrasting themes within the film are remarkable: Beauty and Destruction, Life and Death, Love and Hate, and they are all handled in such a way by Director Tomas Alfredson within the snowy suburban setting that it truly makes this film a pleasure to watch.

Kare Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson produce fantastic performances as the two young leads and only add to the films greatness. It is hard to find a single thing to criticize this film on.
The direction is brilliant, the cinematography is stunning, the performances are mesmerizing and the soundtrack is haunting. It is a true accomplishment in film-making.

If you are a devout horror fan, you will love this film.
If you love romance, you will love this film.
There truly is something for everyone. And after only seeing this film recently, I now see why it has won over 40 awards worldwide.

Let The Right One In tugs at the heart strings more than any other film of it's kind. A heartwarming love story weaved in with terror and enough lashings of ultra violence to keep any gore-hound happy.
    A tale of true devotion.
    Sensational.

  2.  Some cases should never be opened...

I would like to be saying that this film was fantastic but unfortunately i can't, for one reason.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film all the way through, but in my opinion i felt that it was slightly let down by a weak ending, which is unfortunate as i believe that with a better ending this film could of been great.

With the minor negatives out of the way, i did really enjoy this film
Renee Zellweger seemed to fit the role of the naive, sensitive and caring social worker perfectly. Ian Mcshane as her loyal police detective friend was also fantastic, and Bradley Cooper as the comic-relief love interest was a joy to watch as always, showing his impeccable comic timing whilst also being given the chance to show that he is also a talented actor.
However, i must say that the outstanding performance of the entire film came from young Jodelle Ferland as the ambiguous 'sweet but sinister' neglected child Lilith, who ends up in Renee's care after some alarming troubles at home. She is intriguing to watch as she slowly morphs from sympathetic victim into a genuinely threating presence within the film. The tension that builds throughout the film is also fantastic and is handled skilfully.

Despite the slightly below-par ending, the story, performances and soundtrack all merge greatly to create an exceptionally enjoyable, and above average supernatural horror.

  3.  28 Veiws Later...

This is one of my favorite horror films of all time, and is, without a doubt, a classic in my eyes.
It contains genuine scares, not jumps (unlike the majority of new-wave horror that relies on having something jump at the screen to scare the audience) and at times the tension is raised to almost unbareable levels that leaves the veiwer terrified.
It also contains some of the most relate-able characters i have ever seen in a horror picture. They are not a rag-tag group of stereotypes...they are a rag-tag group of real people, the kind of people who could be your next door neighbour or work colleagues.
The realism of this film is sometimes shocking, as at times it feels like these are real people who's journey is simply being documented.
The story completely immerses you and leaves you wondering "What if this was happening for real? Happening to me?"
The direction from Danny Boyle is, as always, phenomenal and the decision to shoot the film almost entirely on handheld digital cameras really adds to the gritty, uncomfortabley realistic tone of the film.
Brilliant performances from all of the cast and everything down to the soundtrack is perfect
i have watched this film countless times, yet it still encapsulates and scares me

    Genuinely Frightening,
    You will NOT be dissapointed
    5 stars!

    - 28 Weeks Later:
i don't have quite as much to say about this film.
Unlike the first, the characters are mostly stereotypes that we are used to seeing in movies of this genre - The Hero, The Side-Kick, The Scared Guy, The One's Who Make Ridiculously Stupid Decisions...they are all there.
The storyline is decent, but completely lacks the believability factor displayed by the first.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo tries to emulate Danny Boyle's direction and attempts to keep the feel of the first film, with some shaky hand-held work and effective use of lighting so i must show some respect for his attempts to make the best film he can with the material
The most noteable difference is, you can tell this is a basic hollywood production to cash in on a successful predecessor which is possibly this films biggest problem

With a promising opening sequence the film ultimately fails to deliver on the same level as the first...but in all fairness, that is a very hard thing to do

However, all that being said this film is still an enjoyable watch
    3 stars!

For the low price this is great value horror and definately worth it for the 2 films!

(i apologise for the long review)

  4.  Paranormal Activity Is Like Marmite...

You either love it, or hate it.

If you like your films to be fast paced, exciting and to keep you on the edge of your seat then no, you will not like this film and i would advise you to steer well clear
This film is slow, there is no doubt about that. But it manages to keep you on the edge of your seat for a different reason as the tension builds and builds and the film becomes genuinely eerie

i for one loved it, and relished the oppurtunity to once again see a horror that doesn't rely almost completely on violence and gore, an art that has become almost extinct in the film industry

i believe Paranormal Activity was best veiwed in the Cinema, as it will be hard to emulate the full experience of the film on DVD/Blu-Ray for home audiences. Despite this fact it will be a film i add to my collection in the near future

    Basic storyline
Believeable performances from leads Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat
    And Genuine Scares
    5 stars for effort
    4 stars for execution

  5.  A Must See For All Slasher Fans!

    Posted:

This has to be one of the best DVD purchases i have made in a very long time. It's Witty, Original and at times, Hilarious.

Fans of Horror, especially fans of the Sub-Genre "Slasher" will find this film an absolute delight. What this film does, and does brilliantly, is it takes an entire genre and completely flips it on it's head. Offering explanations to the loose-ends often left by films of this genre...
Think "Scream", only 10x more imaginative and twice as good (in my opinion)

    Writer/Director Scott Glosserman has cleverly utilized the critisms handed out by those who are not fans of the "Slasher" genre;
    - Why is this person randomly killing these people?
    - They are running. He is walking. How does he still manage to catch them?
    - Why don't they just go out the window?...
All of these questions, and more, are given valid & incredibly clever answers which often make you laugh-out-loud at their brilliance

The intelligent screenplay and great direction is not the only reason this film works on the level that it does, as it also offers some great performances from the cast...
(an area where the majority of Slasher films suffer)
Particularly from Nathan Baesel, who gives an erratic, edgey, hilarious and highly entertaining performance as Leslie Vernon.

This is the perfect film for any "Slasher" fan.
With it's countless homages to previous classics and small intricacies that will make any die-hard Slasher fan smile, it is extremely difficult to find a criticism of this film.

If you are not a fan of Slasher, i would advise you to seriously think about it before purchasing this film...not because it is a bad film...but simply because only fans of the genre will be able to fully appreciate the effort put in to make this film. However, i do believe that even those who aren't paricularly fond of the genre will be able to find something they love about this film

All in all, this is brilliant film that any horror lover should, without a doubt, have in their collection, and a film that even non-horror fans will enjoy

you will never look at a Slasher in the same way again...in a positive sense!
