HTC Hero is our first phone to embody HTC Sense - an intuitive, seamless experience built upon three fundamental principles - make it mine, stay close, and discover the unexpected.

With HTC Hero, personalization reaches a level never before possible. Rather than burying important content under layers of menus, the HTC Hero lets you put it at glance view, with a selection of widgets that can be placed right on the home screen. The widgets themselves can be personalized with a variety of designs and sizes that best match your personality.

With Scenes, a new profile feature, HTC Hero becomes multiple phones in one. Create and switch between Scenes that reflect different moments in your life. Your Hero becomes a weekend phone that helps you relax with your choice of tunes, catch up with your favorite friends and capture some memories with HTC Footprints. And when you go on a trip, your phone becomes your personal guide and gives you instant access to local time, weather and maps.

Top 100 Mobile Reviewer

Had this phone for coming up to three weeks now, and very happy with it. It's the only Smartphone I've owned so I have nothing to compare it to, but it does what I need it to do and relatively well.

Before purchasing the hTC Hero, I had done a considerable amount of research about Smartphone's on the market. I was initially going to purchase a Sony Ericsson Xperia1 about 3 months ago, yet I never really was appealed to it enough to buy it. The Nokia N97 also came very close to being purchased, yet I felt this lacked a modern feel with its Symbian operating system it runs of, it just felt a bit out-dated for such a great phone. The iPhone3Gs was always an option, but I'm just not a great fan of Apple themselves, but that's a different matter.

Therefore I was actually preparing myself to wait until I could find a perfect phone, until I came across the hTC Hero. I must be honest at first, I hadn't really heard of hTC before this, but from what I've read they seem like a decent and reliable company, maybe not as big as Nokia in the phone market, but for new generation phones I know I would chose hTC over Nokia, just compare their latest products, the N97 is the first touch screen from Nokia therefore I didn't feel like placing my faith in a possible trial phone from them.

The attraction of this phone is the personalising of its screens, giving you easy access to anything you need to do in an instant. To compare it to Smartphone out there I would have to say it's very much an iPhone experience.

I feel as a whole this phone holds some great potential as well as being an already brilliant Smartphone. It runs of the relatively new Google mobile operating system 'Android', still continually being developed therefore you can come to expect updates in the future which could bring extra benefits. The Android app market also offers a wide variety of apps, very much like we have come to see on the iPhone, except on the Android market you can find a majority of them for free.

I've heard some common reviews of the hTC Hero claiming the camera is not great, in my experience so far it has been all I need, some also say that it lacks a flash therefore being poor in dark conditions, yes ok it lacks a flash, but if you ever face yourself in a situation where you need to take a photo in darker conditions, something that I have learnt whilst using it, is to go into the camera settings, 'Settings - Image properties - Contrast -2', the contrast would have been set at '0' by default, turning this down to -2 makes it perform much better in darker conditions.

With its great features however there is some minor points that I've realised whilst using it, because of its multi-task capability it can tend to drain the performance slightly if you end up using loads of different apps, this is probably down to some of the apps not closing completely once you quit out of it, whether because they've been programmed to remember your last action or not been programmed to actually close completely, it's got to be remembered that most of these apps are third-party, therefore they haven't exactly been programmed for optimal performance. A method that could be used is to either download a task manager for the phone, or just restart the phone, very rarely have I needed to do this though.

Overall, being quite fussy about buying what I think is the best available for what I want it to do, I am very happy with the hTC Hero, and would chose nothing else over this at this moment in time.

I found this phone easy to use, it does takes a while to load up the start screen when the phone is shut down though which is a down side.

As this phone is unlocked i found that the network is the most important thing you need to check before buying this phone as you may have to change sim cards, just ring your network provider and advise them that you will want 3G access as some will not support this even if the sim card says it is able to!!. I was on 02 and 02 said that they would not support the 3G which meant i was unable to use the phones internet while i was out and about. You need to make sure that your current sim card it 3G you can find this on your sim card it will have 3G somewhere on the card.

I am now on T-Mobile and can use the 3G and it is brilliant so easy and fast!!! I am also connected to my home router.

I found when tranfering files across from your computer eg Music it can be difficult but i found a simple added folder marked Music will sort it out.

When you transfer music files and you want one as a ringtone there is a option to trim the file but i have found that triming and set as ringtone it works but when you turn your phone off it reverts to default ringtone so i have had to have the full song as ringtone to stop this happening!!

There are tons of widgets to choose from and all of them brilliant, google maps work brill also. You cannot use most of the widgets without having internet. GPS you will need the 3G as there is a widget where you can download a free GPS and it works really well!!!

The phone is just the right size for me personally, my partner has the new Samsung Omnia HD and it is bigger then this phone and i find it difficult to use unlike the HTC!

I like how it informs you when emails come in, you can link googlemail and any other emails you may have eg Hotmail. and it notifys you of the email coming in.

If you have facebook account when you put your friends in the phonebook you can link it to facebook so it transfers their birthdays and profile picture which is good!!

When you get the manual it isnt very helpful, it doesnt give alot away. i was trying to find how to lock the phone and found by fluck it was the shut down button. Also i was trying to find out how to add multiple numbers on a contact and found there is a link at the bottom when you add contacts which says something like add addition or something and that is where you would add extra information on that contact.

Battery life isnt the best but i do keep WiFi on and i have only had it about 4 days so it may need charging a few times more then usual.

All in all it is a very good phone i do rate it!! But please check your network provider first to make sure you can get access to 3G as you will not be able to access alot of the facilities.

Brilliant piece of kit, ive had quite a few phones in the past (including the iPhone) and this beats them all into submission without even breaking into a sweat !!!
The Android market is far superior to (and a helluva lot cheaper) than the iPhones App Store as well.

I've had the hero for 1 month & I can't put it down.
My original N95 broke & I was very tempted to replace it with a newer N series but had heard good things about the Android system so started to research it. My research led me to 2 phones, the i-phone & the HTC Hero. The new i-phone 3GS was £450 sim free & I wasn't prepared to pay that. I ordered the HTC Hero & fell in love with it straight away, the looks, the screen, the useability, everything about it I loved. I've downloaded some really cool widgets from the market to enchance the phone even more. Every day my work colleagues keep asking to look at my phone & there getting more tempted each time.
I would recommend this to everyone.
