The Nokia N900 packs a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 CPU much like the Apple iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre and Samsug Omnia HD and offers hardware graphics acceleration and 256MB RAM.

Running on the new Linux-based Maemo 5 OS, the Nokia N900 power lies in the capable multi-tasking, which makes it stand out even among the ranks of the Symbian smartphones. With Nokia N900 you've got around-the-clock connectivity thanks to Wi-Fi and HSPA. The N900 offers phone features as well allowing full-featured telephony.Switching between applications is simple, as all running content is constantly available through the dashboard. The panoramic homescreen can be fully personalized with favorite shortcuts, widgets and applications.

Interaction with the handset is available through the large 3.5-inch touchscreen display with a WVGA resolution (800 x 480 pixels) and the 3-row QWERTY keypad. The touch screen also offers a virtual on-screen keyboard and operating with a stylus is possible. Thanks to the web browser powered by Mozilla technology, websites should look just as they do on a desktop computer. Online videos and interactive applications are not a problem as the Maemo OS has full Adobe Flash 9.4 support.

The Nokia N900 has 32GB of storage, which is expandable up to 48GB via a microSD card. Other features include a GPS receiver with Ovi Maps, an FM transmitter, a 3.5mm audio jack with TV-out function, Bluetooth and DivX/XviD video playback support.

 Must say wow....

First up this phone is an attempt to try and remove some of the dominance of the iPhone by attempting to mimic the apps store with maemo and ovi stores and I must say so far it is growing rather quickly so soon this phone could be a must have.

The phone itself is quick in terms of response to loading apps and menu's and the camera to say its only 5mp is very good quality with geotagging and video capability.

The next big thing this phone offers is the ability to watch video's and listen to music. The sound is excellent and the video playback is exceptional and supports a wide range of media using a lot of decoders.

As to be expected the battery life isn't brilliant if you use the apps a lot but with a constant updating variety of widgets at your disposal and the ability to do a number of things at once this phone is excellent with some impressive features. Must get 5 stars

 Things to watch out for

This is easily a 5 star phone. So ill just focus on the things ive struggled with so far instead of repeating what you will find on internet reviews. (Im just your average consumer rather than an expert by the way)

1. The touch screen is resistive (a particularly good one mind you) , which isnt as responsive at other screens and every so often you will find yourself having to tap a couple of times for it to register. There is a stylus, but you wont need it too often (ive only used it for the chess game). You will get used to the screen so i dont think its a critical factor, but its one of the more noticible differences with similar phones.

2. The screen is also smaller and lower resolution than other major phones, but fret not, you are not likely to notice. Media and the menu system looks great.

3. I struggled to put media onto the device to start with, my one sometimes confused some music files for video (a mistake my psp doesnt make). File organisation i found to be abit sketchy also, it tends to just list videos (although music orgainsation works fine).

4. Devise, although well built, feels very fragile. I particularly bad fall id imagine could damage it more than my battered HTC dream. Some sort of case would be a good idea.

5. Internet connection tends to be abit hit-or-miss, i have a tmobile mobile internet connection but for some reason seems to be slower than using it on my HTC dream. Perhaps i had a poor signal, i dont know. The browser can be a little inprecise at times but ive come to expect that from smaller screens.

6. Keyboard is definatly a plus but it is quite narrow.

7. Portrait screen mode only when using the phone function, i think there might have been a update for that but i dont know how to change it.

8. you might need to refer to the internet for information about some of the more obscure funtions (like sync-ing contacts and emails).

 Great device

This device is fantastic. I was a little dubious about buying the n900 being a technophobe. Thought i might struggle using it. Had no problems whatsoever. If you do get the phone your first thing to do is go to maemo.org! IT's a community off fellow users. They make new apps, games, programmes and share them for free with the community.
I have already downloaded 500 songs and 10 videos. they have barely registered on the memory off the phone. Thats without having a memory card in. The phone didnt come with the memory card but i doubt i'l ever need one. EXCELLENT * * * * * *

 Excellent

Trust me. I've not used my Sony Vaio laptop much since I got this. I use the N900 85% of the time. The device still has quirks that needs to be ironed out and I hear Nokia is on the case but notwithstanding, this is bang for buck all the way and the specs dont do it justice, you need to see it in action.

Best thing I love about this beast is its openess - its a true antithesis to the iPhone. Its not shy to let you explore the web as it should be and it multitasks like a housewife too. Lets me do what I want when I want. It smells of FREEDOM and its BRILLIANT in everyway.

 Fantastic phone

This is my first smart phone and I made the right choice. Its fast, easy to use and versatile. Love the the mapping software and the gps tracking, the ability to swap internet connections to your home network once its detected, the camera and the video and music play back. If you dont like watching a small screen you can connect it to your tv with the cables provided. I cant praise this phone enough. Only one small draw back it does not do mms picture messaging, hopefully this will come in a future software update.
