Received my N800 from play a couple of days ago and cant seem to put it down! its superb! A perfect media companion for home and travel. The Web browser is awesome, displaying as it would on a standard computer(Which includes FULL youtube, and flash sites). Has a great media player for music and video, with decent speakers for listening to your tracks / videos. The price truly is superb, and definitely worth the investment. It has everything you need to stay in touch and stay entertained. RSS readers bring news stories down quickly and in an easy to read format. Mail works a treat displaying in full HTML,and also as long as your by a WIFI hot spot,or connected to your phone,it will download new messages as soon as they come in. The on screen key board takes a little while to get used to,but i would say it is better than the likes of the iphone. It will recognize if you are using your fingers or a stylus and adjust the keyboard size accordingly. As it runs a version of Linux, there are hundreds of apps available to keep you entertained, my favourite being DOOM! All in all, i think this is a great bit of kit to keep you connected and entertained .
And in answer to an earlier question about updating the phone - the Operating system update can be found on Nokias website (a FREE update)
and future software updates can be done through the Nokia Software Updater.
So in closing,id just like to say this truly is a great bit of kit, get yourself a decent sized memory card and its a great competitor to the ipod touch.

Recieved my n800 from play a few days ago now and updated it with os2008 which is s must to unlock cpu to full speed. Cant seem to put it down, in fact i have packed my laptop away and not missed it much! if all u want is web browsing, email, playing music n videos then this does it all and more. Tons of free software available to download straight to tablet no need for pc. Theres even a program called vnc which you can control your pc with it shows your complete desktop on the screen which is so cool just like having windows installed!
Finally the screen is just awesome best i have seen on any device inc. iphone!!
At 150quid this has got to be a bargain
The only improvement i can make of is battery life lasts about 2hrs surfing could be longer
Fantastic product

Have had this for 3 months now and surf and play games on it every night in bed.
I go through the usual routine. Check rss feed. Click on links to get more info etc. Check emails while listening to the myriad of radio channels or MP3s which are being feed from my main PC.
How about chatting with your friends on Yahoo messenger? One overseas girlie was very happy that we could natter while I was in bed :)
Some websites, however, seriously slow down your N800. With Java and other things trying to load in etc. Don't let this put you off, I'm just telling you what to expect.
If you check for updates you'll see that new stuff has been added in the 'things to install' list. There's some nice games to give your grey matter something to work on :)
The onboard sound is adequate, haven't tried headphones yet.
Can't think what else to say at the moment. Suppose I'd better put this down and get outta bed ;)
Not what I expected but...Awesome!!!

Hey everyone!
First I have to say Yes, get it....heres why.....
firstly like evryone else said it is literally like having a PC or laptop on the go, sometimes you'll be able to access wireless internet elsewhere by picking up signals, or access yours at home...you do not need to buy any other parts. I was very suprised as soon as I finished setting up the time and date it took it 1 minuit to pick up and recieve my home wireless signal and now Im away!!
the camera on it isnt perfect, but it is very good!
If you do buy it then the instructions in detail is on the nokia N series site.
I'm not quite sure if it evan takes a sim card at all, there is a slot but its too small so im unsure of what the slot if for.
It does take a SD card one of which is provided.
I still have a few questions but Ive only had it two days..
The delivery took too long and had a load of hassle but it was only a minor misshap in the warehousing part and play.com were incredibly helpful on the helpline and this is very unlikely to happen all the time so my vote for you is Go for it!!!
you thought sliced bread was good

I found the lowest price for the Nokia N800 on play.com Ordered it on 1st Jan and it was delivered to Northern Ireland on the 3rd. Great work!!
I have used the N800 for 2 months now and it is really good value for money. It literaly puts the internet at your fingertips. I can check movie reviews in minutes before deciding what to watch on the telly. The screen is fantastic and I've browsed for hours without feeling the need to turn on my laptop. The screen resolution is so good, you dont even need to zoom in. There are obviously some compromises given the size of the device. Typing is a bit of a pain and the browser could have been better at managing bookmarks. Youtube is quite jerky but I hear there is a fix out for that. I would still give the N800 and play.com 5 stars for delivering more than I expected.
This good, really good - buy it!

The N800's screen is larger than the one on my smart mobile phone, it is much easier to carry around than a laptop and significantly cheaper than the nearest UMPC. The N800 is simply the best compromise on cost and portability - buy it!.
Best of all - there is a palm emulator (VM GarnetT) which means you can run thousands of Palm programs on it.
The N800 is a full blown mini computer lacking a few critical bits of software. Namely, a fully fledged word processor and spread sheet. The good news is they are both available for free download, Gnumeric and Abiword. Hook up to the internet via either Wifi or via the inbuilt blue tooth to a blue tooth phone which can be used as a modem. Out of the box, the battery is fully charged so it works straight away. Fire up the web browser and it asks you for Wifi password and Bluetooth phone details then you are on the web in minutes. Top tip is, carefully peel the silver tag from the screen protector and stick the tag on the dimpled end of the battery. Otherwise the battery needs either a thin knife or a paperclip to prize it out. Leave the screen protector in place, it should last a while until you replace it with a decent screen protector.
I found there is a steep but thankfully short learning curve both in finding your way around the device and how to download and install software. I upgraded to the operating system from OS2007 Nokia OS2008 Straight away. This is the same standard as the more expensive N810. It has several advantages, it changes the processor speed up to 400mhz and therefore runs quicker, adds WPA support for WiFi passwords and you get a basic mapping program 'wayfinder' for free. The only reason not to upgrade for now is that the program I really want, Abiword has yet to be 'ported' over to OS2008. If you decide to do the upgrade, there are two ways to do this, the Nokia way, from their support web page is easy but takes for ever. The second method needs a little research on the Internet tablet help sites and forums. Don't bother, the first one is easier. Now for the surprises, It has a built in FM radio, you just need to go to Application Manager, there should be two available software downloads, Camera which allows single shot pictures from the built in web cam. FM radio, which puts a radio applet on the main desk top.
I managed to connect to my USB flash pen drive. This requires two things, firstly a means to physically connect the pen drive, secondly the N800 needs to be switch from passive (OTG) to active (Host) mode. Buy either a 'USB female to female' connector which fits on the end of the supplied 'Mini USB to male USB cable' or a dedicated 'Mini USB to Female USB cable'. To switch to Host mode, the programmer of the popular UKMP program now bundles a beta version with a USB host switching program. There are other ways to do this but they involve soldering cables and command line instructions - not nice. The USB host mode should also allow you to connect a USB keyboard, note however the N800 only puts out about 100mA where as most full blown USB peripherals need up to 500mA so it is unlikely that you will get a USB powered portable hard drive or DVD drive to work. That said I read one person who claimed to have got a CD drive working using a powered USB hub and 'mounting' the drive manually using command line instructions.
Finally, how to download software from the web. A small number of programs install directly from a link to a '.install' file. Most however are found in online 'Repositories'. You download a list of programs, this gets added to the list in you Applications manager program. From here you pick the specific program you want and it installs automatically - easy.
Nokia N800 - Cutting edge technology + fantastic value

This truly is an amazing piece of technology; not an exact replacement for a laptop, but pretty close - in my view - and much more transportable. It performs so many different tasks it has taken me some time to get my head around getting to grips with them all; I am currently still finding new aspects/ 'things it can do' !
There are just two actions I would take to make life even easier : (i) buy a mobile blue tooth keyboard (the on screen keyboard provided is a bit fiddly) and (ii) upgrade to the 2008 O/S -(it's free). If I wanted to be really picky I would like the email function to be a bit more sophisticated, but hey you can be too fussy.
In summary, the Nokia N800 offers excellent value for money, and such is the breadth of it's functions many will think twice about taking their laptop, MP3 player, mobile phone, alarm clock (!), GPS (?) on their future travels. I look forard to seeing what the next generation of internet tablets can do; it will be a tough task to improve on Nokia's 800 series, methinks.
