I purchased this phone in 2007, and i loved it at first. After a while, the keys started to break and had small cracks down them. The top keys broke and the screen broke all the time. I also have friends who have the same phone, and theres have all done the same. DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE!

  Major Warning to Everyone

Agreeing with most other reviews. I purchased this phone around 7 months ago, and for the first 4 or 5 it worked perfectly fine, and for what you get the price is awesome.

However, four of my collegues also own this phone and the problems are rather severe.

The number keys all have extremely thin cracks down them on all five of our phones, and in 3 cases, the number keys have fallen out.

The sliding mechanism which I have paid great care not to damage has become stiff and loose.

My phone and another has has the "Confirm, Back and Up" Key broken, to the extent where even removing the key and using something to press the inner button does not work. Along with the screen often malfunctioning

Buy with caution, this phone is an awesome little phone, but if you plan on having it for more than a year, I can quite safely say you should expect to have issues with it.

I brought this phone in june. Now it is hanging onto it's last legs. All the buttons are cracked down the middle they work most of the time but require a firm push. Where i you plug the headphones in on the side of the phone it moves in and out and this effects the quality of the sound. The phone doesn't slide as well as it used to it is slow and does not slide all the way down on its own. I would recommend buying it but only if you are plannign on using for 6 months.

  Poor build quality

I've had this phone for just over 8 months now and I have to say that despite it being nice and easy to use (like all Sony's are) it is let down in the build quality department.
The most notable thing is the keys. Four of my buttons have hairline cracks running down them which isn't acceptable as your going to be using them all the time. This will only get worse with time. So far there have been no problems with the sliding mechanism yet.

This phone is meant to be a mobile music player, yet SE clearly didn't think about this. For example there is no sort feature for your music in the playlist. I had to use a external program called DriveSort to resolve this for me. I have just picked up a SE K770i as a replacement which is meant to be a cyber shot phone and that allows me to sort my music. Tbh the W range is a bit of a con, as all your getting is the off orange colour scheme and the walkman button on the front.

The battery life is another negative point. If you have the pedometer turns on (which counts your steps) it eats the battery in a few days, without it only does extend the life but it's still not good enough imo.

Overall this phone could have been a lot better, and the shocking build quality is not acceptable.

There are lots of good things about this phone but there are some bad things about this phone

Good points:
- The styling is good
- It is a walkman phone so it has a great MP3 player
- The bluetooth works very well and it sends things easily
- The camera and video are both very good
- The buttons are easy to use

Bad point:
- The battery runs out too quickly

w580i - good phone, poor quality

| | See all mrmitch's reviews (1)

I got this phone sometime last year. it is a good phone, software wise etc. It never crashed or anything.

HOWEVER, I wasn't pleased with the build quality. The number keys kept snapping in half - which I didn't find acceptable. I had about 4 replacements and it kept on happening - I eventually got my service provider to exchange the w580 for a different model with no key-snapping problems.
